Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Book - Reference Cricket, The Cricket on the Hearth, circa 1930
A text book used by a local Tawonga student in the 1930's. The school she attended was Rosehill Girls School in Albury. This was one of the foundation schools of Scots School, Albury. Rosehill was opened in 1926 by a Miss Lillian Windridge, for both day and boarding students, in a large former residential property on the corner of Crisp and Young Streets and was named after her uncle's property 'Rosehill' near Kyneton in Victoria. It catered from kindergarten to the Leaving Class. The school flourished and extra space was made available at the adjacent 'Springfield' property for more classrooms. In 1934 lack of space forced 'Rosehill' to move to a new location in Kiewa Street. In 1938, Miss Windridge sold the school to Miss Anna Drennan, a well educated Scots woman with a Masters' degree from Edinburgh University. By early 1939 the school was again overcrowded and was moved to the property 'Woodstock' in Schubach Street, East Albury and the name changed to 'Woodstock School for Girls'. In 1972, the Woodstock Presbyterian Girls School and the Albury Grammar School amalgamated to form the Scots School Albury. Wilma's family were one of the early families to settle in the Kiewa Valley and had a property at Tawonga. After her marriage, Wilma moved, with her husband, to Mt. Beauty until 1958 when they moved back to manage the farm and remained there for the rest of her life.It has a social significance as it depicts the standard of literature that was expected to be read and appreciated by students in the 1930's era. As the school was situated in Albury, it meant that the student would have been a boarder as daily transport to and from the Kiewa Valley would have been impossible at that time, unlike the 'School Bus' run that is available today. At this time there was no 'secondary education' available in the valley and education beyond primary school would have been limited to children of families that could afford to send their children to board at privately run schools.Book of literature by Charles Dickens. Has green cover with black lettering and decoration. It seems to be one of a series of books called the 'Highways and Byways of English Literature". On the front cover, at the top, 'Highway and Byways of English Literature'. Centre of page is the title "The Cricket on the Hearth" and the author Dickens. Underneath this is 'Blackies English Texts Edited by W.H.D.Rouse, Litt.D." Across the foot of the page is 'Blackie and Son Limited'. On the first page, hand written in ink is "Wilma Roper, Rosehill G.S.,Albury."secondary education, albury, kiewa valley, tawonga -

Plate, Mouth of the Hopkins, c.1920
This is a dish made by the English company of Royal Stafford Bone China about 1920 and sold in Warrnambool as a souvenir of the city with an image of the scene at the mouth of the Hopkins River. The scene depicted shows the old Hopkins Hotel, Proudfoots Boathouse, Lyndoch and the Hopkins River Bridge. This dish is of some interest as an example of the type of high quality souvenir offered to local tourists in the early 20th century. It is historically interesting as it depicts the Hopkins River mouth about 1920 and there have been many changes since then. This is a white oval dish with fluting on the sides and fluted edges. The rim of the fluting is outlined in gold. On the inside base of the dish is a black and white image of the mouth of the Hopkins River. There are brown stains on part of the fluted material and the outside base has the maker’s shield and name. There is a small crack on the edge of the dish.‘Guaranteed Royal Stafford English Bone China Made in England.’ history of warrnambool -

Book, Miniature dictionary, 1900
This is a miniature book and container which was known as ‘the Smallest English Dictionary in the World’. It is a copy of a Dr Johnson dictionary. It was intended to be worn as a locket and sold with an accompanying magnifying glass. It was an advertising feature for the Pears Soap company. This item has no local significance but it is a very interesting one, showing the type of novelty adornment popular in the late Victorian era. This is a miniature book with a red leather cover and 384 pages. The name of the book and the name ‘Pears’ are stamped in gilt on the covers. The book is enclosed in a silver-coloured metal container with a thickened glass window in front to view the title of the book. The glass acts as a magnifier. The container has a hinged closing device. It has a ring at the top to attach the item to a chain or belt. The container is much rusted.Front cover of book: ‘Bryce’s English Dictionary’ Back Cover: ‘Pears’ bryce’ english dictionary, warrnambool, dr johnson dictionary -

Document - ROYAL PRINCESS THEATRE COLLECTION: EIGHT FIRST BIRTHDAY SOUVENIR PROGRAMME, c1955
... The Royal English Opera Company ...Royal Princess Theatre Eight First Birthday Souvenir Programme, 31st August, 1955. 1874 - 1955. Manager: Don Vincent. Price - Sixpence. Proceeds: Cinematograph Trade Benevolent Fund. The Royal Princess Theatre. In May, 1874, the late John Crowley, at a cost of 12,000 pounds the Royal Princess Theatre. It was opened on 31st August, 1874, on which occasion the 'Grand Duchess of Gerolstein' was performed. It was in January, 1904, that the Theatre was closed until April, 1905, for re-construction at a cost of 5,000 pounds. Further alterations were made I 1936 when the old circle and the gallery was converted into the present circle and loge, the cost on this occasion was 14,000 pounds. At the Royal Princess has been seen every form of entertainment known in the world. Operas, including Gilbert and Sullivan, Shakespearean plays, Minstrels, Pantomime, Circus (Wirth's making their first appearance in1887), Drama, Revues, Magicians, and the latest medium of entertainment Ice Revue. Of the many shows presented on stage of the theatre, I feel none has survived as long, or as well, as 'Charley's Aunt.' The companies to present their performances have been many and varied, but among an imposing list, the names of Charles Holloway, The Royal English Opera Company, J. C. Williamson Co., and Royal Comic Opera Coy., will long be remembered. The line of notable personalities who have appeared on the stage is long also, and includes such names as John McCormack, Clara Butt, Harry Lauder, Peter Dawson and more recently Jessie Mathews and John Calvert. But of all these and many others, I am sure none can ever compare with the wonderful performances by the late Dame Nellie Melba, who gave her farewell performance in September, 1921. It is interesting to note that Dame Nellie Melba, gave two farewell performances. The first was in February, 1886, when she made a last appearance as Mrs Armstrong, to later become Madame Melba. The first competition of the Austral Society was held in the Theatre in May, 1897, and the first living pictures were seen in August, 1899. The London Bioscope Co. presented 'Struck Oil,' with Maggie Moore, in February, 1901 (Maggie Moore had appeared in the stage play or the same name many times earlier). However, it was not until 1910 that the Royal Princess was mainly used for pictures, and of course, since that year, that has been the principle form of entertainment presented. It was Easter, 1930, that the first talkie, 'The Desert Song,' was screened and then followed coloured films, and now in 1955 the latest in film development - Cinemascope has been installed. This installation caused, for the first time in many years, alterations to the back stage to enable the large 30ft. Screen to be quickly removed ready for any 'live' performances. In 1937 the Royal Princess came under the Management of Northern Amusements Pty. Ltd., a unit of the Woodrow Corporation Ltd., whose policy it is to bring in entertainment to Bendigo, and I, as their representative will carry on the traditions of the past, and make the Royal Princess truly a Home of Entertainment. Orbost & District Historical Society
directory, H. Wise & Co, Victoria Post Office Commercial Directory, C1894
This is a directory of towns giving distances fro Melbourne, populations. There is an entry on Orbost listing the contemporary businesses.Directories are an effective way of researching businesses and trades in small trades. Many small businesses needed to ensure the public was aware of their activity and one of the better ways to do this (in an age before media dominated) was via a directory. Advertisements in the directories often provide extra valuable information .
