Sarah Shillinglaw was born at River Plenty on November 9, 1854. She married Charles Aldous on June 9, 1880 and died in Prahran, Victoria on August 3, 1925. Photographer Charles Nettleton operated from 1 Madeline St, North Melbourne (later known as Carlton) from 1867-1874.. This photo shows the address as North Melbourne. Sands McDogall Directory listing was revised to Carlton in 1869. This would date photo as 1867-1868 though could be later if printed on on paper stock. Originally a parish church, St Paul's became a cathedral in 1981 when Bendigo was declared a separate diocese. The church, designed by Robert A Love, was dedicated in 1868, with the bells being added in 1873 and the organ in 1883. In 1855 the local Presbyterians were granted land in Myers Street. The first building they erected was a large church hall for use as a day school, Sunday school and temporary accommodation for church services. It was opened on 14th May 1855 as a Denominational School. New educational regulations were introduced in 1864 and were quite specific about standards. Children were required to attend at least 50 days each half year. Thomas H Smith, Inspector of Schools in the Sandhurst district examined the students in attendance and twice a year, over the period of the register. March 1864 to Match 1868. Black and white photograph of the rear of the former Supreme Court. Built in 1868 as part of the Ballarat Gaol complex, it became part of the Ballarat School of Mines in 1947 and used for Electrical Engineering. It has now been transformed into a performing arts centre. New building shown is Amenities Building and was officially opened in 1981. Radiating beams used for the top window are made from Oregon wood. Thought to be the last building using this wood for this purpose. Drive up to the building comes off Grant Street. The former bluestone Bulla Shire Hall building was constructed in 1867 and remained the centre of local government until the early 20th century when the administration was moved to Sunbury. In the 1990's the Alister Clark Rose Garden was established in the surrounding grounds. The garden is open to the public all the year round. In 1999 the rose garden was officially opened.A coloured photograph of the front elevation of the original Shire of Bulla offices. It is a bluestone building, double fronted with a pitched roof on both wings and above the porch. The woodwork trims have been painted in cream and red. The double wooden front door is painted red. National Wool MuseumSpinning Wheel
Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This is a German wheel for spinning flax and it dates from the 19th century. The plaque on the back gives the name of the original owner: Anna Dorothea Adelheid Gruther from Orbinghausen, Germany. The date presumably refers to when she was given the wheel.
