Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born in 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph postcard of a brass band marching and playing their instruments. Alice Anderson was a pioneering Australian female motor mechanic. These are important primary sources as they date the location and dates of operation of her garages in Kew. They also interestingly list her rates and charges. The original owner, Kathleen Hall, of the business cards was a personal acquaintance of Alice Anderson and this provides added historical significance and provenance.Three business cards used by Alice Anderson in promoting her Kew garage. The first edition of this magazine was produced by associated elementary schools in the Omeo Shire. The magazine was published from 1920 to 1927 and 1963 to 1969. There was a special issue in 1985. In all issues there is writing by children from schools that have since closed down.This item reflects the changes in education in East Gippsland and is a useful comparison tool for literacy teaching. It also has historical articles for research.Two 28 pp magazines titled "The Gap". 2245.1 is the original issue and 2245.2 is a reprint. The cover is a pale blue colour with black print. In the centre is a drawing of a girl holding a school case on a country road. The magazine contains articles and b/w photographs related to the history of the Omeo Shire. Used by donor in 'Blackburn - a picturesque history'. Dud Prior commenced his first business with ten gold sovereigns. He was born in Nicholson Street Nunawading in 1889 and in 1917 he opened his first shop in Blackburn near the roundabout. Gellibrand station was one of the larger and more important stations possessing a waiting room, station office, parcels shed and refreshment room joined by a common verandah. The refreshment room was managed for many years by Mrs. O'Neill who, with her staff, around 1920, offered a hot meal for one shilling. In the afternoon, a "cuppa and rock cakes" was available to passengers on the train to Colac.
