Photograph, R.K. Whitehead, G42 between Beech Forest and Ferguson, 1960, July 1960
By July 1960 for the Beech Forest railway outwards traffic was down to 12,730 tonnes per year, and from Ferguson under 1,000 tonnes per year. One wagon was all that was needed in July to reach Beech Forest The line kilometre proportion of $26,320 was sufficient in itself to justify the withdrawal of the rail service, without the fact that reconditioning the two Garratt locomotives and rendering serviceable the ancient wagons would make the costs prohibitive. As a result the whole line closed in June 1962.Colour. 144mm x 279mm. Slide, Operation Float 1960, 1960
Two colour slides of Operation Float in 1960. One is a large motor boat with children on board. The captions says the ship is the "Commissioner" belonging to the Harbour Trust. The other is a large yacht with two masts. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. It gave the junior legatees the opportunity to see a naval boat in action, spend time on the water or try sailing. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of outings being organised for children.Colour slide x 2 of ships with children on board in 1960 in Kodachrome off-white cardboard mount with yellow and red print.02997.1 Printed on front 'Made in Australia' and '30' in red ink. Photograph, Cr. W.H.S. Dickinson, Mayor [of Kew] 1946-47, 1960-61, 1946
Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames. This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of Mayors and Town Clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew, for the period 1863 to 1969. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series. Framed portrait of Cr. W.H.S. Dickinson, Mayor of Kew 1946-47, 1960-61. The mounting and framing of the photograph follows a typical layout or style in that each is framed in dark wood, glazed, and laid down on an inscribed board. The inscription identifies the name of the mayor and the year/s that he/she served.Cr. W.H.S. Newspaper, W D Vaughan Pty Ltd, The Kew Advertiser, Thursday November 25, 1926, 25/11/1926
"The Kew Advertiser , published by WD Vaughan, commenced publication in January 1926 and, before the year's end, a modern printing plant had been established at 128 Denmark Street (demolished). This later became the nerve centre for publication of four other local newspapers: The Hawthorn Standard (1932), the Eastern Suburbs Advertiser (1934), the Coburg Courier (1935) and the Brunswick Sentinel (1936). The last two were later sold to another publisher, and the remaining three merged in 1959 to form the Eastern Suburbs Standard. This, in turn, continued under that name until 1974, when it merged with a counterpart from Doncaster, the Whitehorse Standard, and then carried on (under various names) until 1980." (Source: City of Boroondara : Thematic Environmental History, p. 75)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society. The Kew Advertiser, Thursday November 25, 1926. Photograph - Portrait, Vincent Kelly, Maud Vains, Mayoress 1924 - 25, unknown
Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Mayoress Vains was born Maud Anne Norris and she married Ernest Morton Vains in 1903. Ernest Vains entered council in November 1922 and was a member of the City council from 1922 - 1926. digital copy, Ballarat East High School Magazine 1960, 1960
School History: In February, 1955, Ballarat East High School opened in Hopetoun Street, in the vacated weatherboard buildings of the Girls’ Secondary School. In 1956, however, the School moved to its present site in Fussell Street, but because of the lack of space, Woodwork and Cookery classes were still held at Hopetoun Street. Since then there has been steady progress. The original building was extended, more classrooms and a library being built. A Domestic Science block was completed in 1957. Later, as mentioned elsewhere, sheltersheds, basketball courts, a bidycle shed and a canteen were provided for the pupils from funds raised by the Parents’ Association. Where there were previously bare areas of clayey soil we now have asphalt paths and neat gardens. Shrubs were planted, and seats, painted in the School colours, were places around the asphalted areas.
