In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse and an additional troop of the Wangaratta squadron was raised at Cobram. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin about Legatee Donovan Joynt VC. a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. This is a recount of the citation of his war service in 1918 when he won the Victoria Cross. 'For the most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the attack on Herleville Wood, near Chuignes, Peronne on the 23rd August 1918. The article was part of an album of past presidents and prominent legatees from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. The 8th Light Horse Regiment was engaged in the battle to capture Turkish defences at Tel El Khuweifle 16 Kilometres north of Beersheba from 1 to 6 November 1917. Other units were drawn from Imperial Camel Corps, British Yeomanry Division, New Zealand Mounted Rifles and 53 Welsh Division. Ernest Butcher served as No 56 8th Light Horse Regiment. He died of wounds sustained during the August 1915 offensive at Gallipoli. He is buried at Ari Burnu Cemetery Gallipoli. The death medallion was mounted on a wooden panel by his nephew Arthur Butcher and presented to 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles on Anzac Day 1977. The 8th Light Horse suffered crippling casualties in the August offensive at Gallipoli. The 8th Light Horse was formed in 1903 from Victorian Mounted Rifles companies in North East Victoria with Headquarters at Benalla. In 1912 the regiment was renumbered 16th Light Horse. In 1920 the title reverted to 8th Light Horse with the territorial title Indi Light Horse. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. As Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded. Large silver trophy cup with handles and mesh cover mounted on a bakelite base. William 'Lauchie' McGrath, an accountant with Australian Mercantile Land & Finance (AML&F), enlisted in AIF in September 1914. He was posted to 8th Light Horse regiment with the No 268 and rank of trooper. He rose through the ranks, serving at Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine reachin the rank of Captain/Adjutant of the regiment. McGrath wrote the History of the regiment (See 3091.901) Following his return to Australia he took up farming in the Upper Murray, On 10 February 1924, a community picnic was being held at a creek below his Jingellic homestead when a maniac armed with a rifle came out of the scrub and proceeded to shoot indiscriminately int the party. No reason was ever given but it was presumed that he wanted to kill one man who was not among the five he hit. McGrath got the women and children into the creek and organised the other wounded - he had already been hit in the chest - into cover before running over open ground for his rifle in the house. In all he stopped five bullets but the gunman bolted once McGrath appeared with his own weapon.Some weeks later he was captured getting milk from a dairy and declared insane. One of the five victims died that day, one some months later, one had to use a stick for the rest of his life and McGrath was forced to give up the farm and return to his old job as an accountant. He was awarded the silver medal of the Royal Humane Society of NSW and the silver medal of the Royal Shipwreck Relief & Humane Society of NSW. The latter body felt the water in the creek made it appropriate to also make the award. McGrath enlisted again in World War Two, serving firstly as 2/ic Broadmeadows Camp and later 2/ic the Officer Commanding 12th Garrison Battalion.
