J & G Meakin was an English pottery manufacturing company founded in 1851 and based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. In the 19th century, J & G Meakin was known for the vast quantities of cheap ironstone china it produced for the domestic English market and export to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. From around 1970, designs included Liberty, Sterling, Trend, Classic, and Heirloom. Some of these were influenced by earlier designs. The newer wares can be distinguished by back stamp markings such as 'permanent colours', 'everlasting colour', or 'dishwasher proof'. J & G Meakin had close family and corporate affiliations to the potteries Johnson Brothers, and Alfred Meakin Ltd, which explains why many patterns are similar, if not almost the same. There was a takeover by J. & G. Meakin in 1968 of Midwinter Pottery. The firm was then taken over by the Wedgwood Group in 1970. In 2000 production under the Meakin name ceased and their long-established works, Eagle Pottery, was then used for the production of Johnson Bros pottery. Eagle Pottery closed in 2004 when production was transferred abroad; the works were demolished in 2005.Item is significant as it is believed to be an early example of the SOL trademark made between 1913-1925.Ironstone wash jug and bowl set, white, often referred to as a ewer and bowl. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. This shaving soap dish iis part of the collection of items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. A mass produced utilitarian item made for domestic use no history or manufacturing provenance currently available. Over 1500 pottery firms have operated in Stoke-on-Trent since the early 1700's - Some lasted only a few years and some for well over 200 years. Some potters built and owned their own works. Many others were tenants in works built by others and a succession of potters occupied the same works. It was also a common practice for a works to be split between two different pottery companies or for a larger manufacturer to let out a smaller section of his works to a potter who would make wares which were not of interest to the pot works owner. Some potters purchased 'blanks' from other manufacturers and put their own decoration on them some items have two back stamps some have no marks at all. John EDYE (1944- ) John Edye trained in London at Harrow School of Art in the 1970s, and worked with Peter Dick in Yorkshire and Colin Pearson in Aylesford, Kent before returning to Australia to head the Sturt Pottery at Mittagong from 1974 to early 1978. At Sturt, his trainees included Piers Laverty, Wim Boot, Will Castle, Ruth Elder, Colin McNeill, Penelope Carr, Patrick Forman and Malcolm Campbell. Edye introduced them to salt-glazing, a technique at that time not widely used by studio potters. After leaving Sturt, he established the Little Forest Pottery at Yerrinbool in the Southern Highlands of NSW with Penelope Carr, who moved to Hazelbrook to set up her own pottery in 1983. Edye ran his pottery on a production scale for many years, making reduced and salt glazed stoneware and tutoring part time at East Sydney Technical College. Recently he has been working in Egypt as a technical advisor to an aid project, and he was a speaker at the Australian Ceramics Triennale 09. His works are marked with an impressed 'JE' and/or with the three-lobed tree emblem of Little Forest Pottery. A mixer is a kitchen utensil which uses a gear-driven mechanism to rotate a set of beaters in a bowl containing the food to be prepared. It automates the repetitive tasks of stirring, whisking or beating. Mixers for the kitchen first came into use midway through the nineteenth century; the earliest were mechanical devices. The mixer with rotating parts was patented in 1856 by Ralph Collier a tinsmith in Baltimore, Maryland .This was followed by E.P. Griffith's whisk patented in England in 1857. A circular tin used for mixing batters. The 2 beaters are of wire, with metal gears, suspended from a metal strip that fits over the tin bowl. and is clamped into place by a metal screw . A crank handle with a wooden black knob attached by a screw is turned by hand to mix the batter in the base. St. Anns College had its beginnings in the arrival in May 1872 of a group of nuns from Ireland. They were the third group of Sisters of Mercy to come to Victoria. The Warrnambool nuns worked hard to establish a school and orphanage for the socially disadvantaged children of the district. They purchased Wyton from Captain Ardlie that year and also Amhurst later on. The Nazareth sisters of Ballarat took over the orphanage in the late 1880's and moved the children to Ballarat but the school continued to develop an expanding curriculum. A chapel was built in 1887 and a school wing in 1906. They survived on tuition fees and the generosity of benefactors though the early and middle part of the 20th century including a large bequest by Mrs Vera Kenna in the 1960's. Boarders were a regular part of convent life until the 1970's which is probably the source of this plate. St Ann's College was combined with St Joseph's CBC college as Emmanuel College and operates today as the largest Catholic college in the district.This has significance as it is associated with one of the longest running schools in the district and hence would have a connection to many Warrnambool people as well as district people who boarded at the college.White bowl, with green and yellow stripe around edge and emblem. Robert Cochrane, 1843 - 1935, regarded as the "father" of Congregationalism in Victoria was chairman of directors of Brooks Ttnhinsnn Ptv.. Ltd.. and one of the leading personalities of the Congregational Union of Victoria. After having spent two years in Victoria as a member of Brooks Robinson Pty., Ltd., Mr. Cochrane returned to England in 1869. In 1883, he returned to Melbourne. On His return to Victoria he became interested in the work of the Congregational Church, and joined the Augustine Church, at Hawthorn in 1886; he was senior deacon when he died. For many years Mr. Cochrane was a senior member of the committee of the Congregational College of Victoria, and he took a leading part in the development of Congregationalism in this Victoria. Many benefited by his generosity and philanthropy, and his interest in the work of the church was combined with a generous assistance to child welfare organisations, including the Sunday School Union, the Kindergarten Union and the Boys Brigade.
