This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Westminster Fine China Australia started in the Melbourne suburb of Cheltenham at 7 Arnold Street, in 1954 by Stanley Rogers and Son Ltd. They initially used imported blanks from Japan, which were made to their specifications, and which were then decorated locally. They produced a standard range of shapes for souvenir ware, later expanding into a wide range of tea sets, dinnerware and many other styles of china ware. The Abbey mark, based on Westminster Abbey in London, was used from the start of production until about 1962.The Hume Weir was constructed in the late 1920s and was a critical state in the development of water management in the Murray Darling Basin. After meeting for 14 years in rented premises, in the Prince of Wales Hall, Wodonga Council built its first Shire Hall on the corner of High and Elgin Streets in 1890. The first Shire Hall was demolished in 1971. The second building, Wodonga’s new Municipal Offices in Woodland Grove were used for the first time by Wodonga Councillors on 7th August 1957. The Woodland Grove building has since been used for a range of purposes, most recently as a café, but is currently unoccupied. The third purpose-built council chambers were opened in November 1976 with the first council meeting there on 1st December 1976. Irene Mildred Wharton (1888 - 1983) the only child of Thomas Llewellyn Wharton and his wife Mildred, lived most of her early life in Bendigo until her marriage in 1911. Her father worked for The Bendigo Independent news newspaper as compositor and printer until his retirement in 1913 from lead poisoning. Apparently, printer's ink contained lead in those days, and he had health problems from a build up of lead in his system. Child's teaset made of China - originally belonging to Mildred Wharton; used by three generations. Tea set has blue and green leaves on a white background. There are no maker's marks. The cup, saucer, plate and bowl were part of a dinner and tea set owned by Martha Edward, nee Course, the grandmother of the donor. It was passed down to Martha's daughter, Vera Edwards then to her grand-daughter.Samson opened a pottery in England in 1805 which was later acquired by S. Birdwood & Sons and first registered c1853. The mark was varied over periods of time. The mark on this item was registered in 1855.Fine china with printed floral pattern and scalloped edge with gold trim. The donor of this gift, Professor John Gibbs, has played an important role in the history of ANZCA as a board member of the first ANZCA Council. In the late 1980s Professor Gibbs was President of the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists and in 2004 received the ANZCA medal for his major contributions to the status of anaesthesia. The muffineer set was presented in a custom made box bearing the manufacturer's mark 'Nanking Store', active in Shanghai, China from the late 19th century until early 20th century. Each item in the set is stamped with the makers mark and character of a rooster. It is unknown as to the symbolism of the rooster, however, it may have represented the Chinese year of the rooster. It is possible this is a Chinese export silver piece, as a result of increased export trade to the West in the early 20th century. Chinese export silver were made in foreign taste for export, in particular common items such as tea and coffee sets. A Muffineer is a small container with a pierced top for sprinkling sugar, salt, spice, or other powder. It gained its name from its early use for sprinkling sugar or salt on muffins and were part of the Victorian tableware. After the First World War and the change of life style, this was later referred to as sugar shakers.A sterling silver muffineer set of Queen Anne revival with tray. The set comes with a custom made presentation box, lined with beige silk. The box proper is lined in dark blue velour with individual sections cut out to sit each set piece. Each piece is hallmarked except four spoons. The Cutty Sark was launched on 22 November 1869. She was named by the wife of George Moodie, the ship's first master who had also supervised her construction. Cutty Sark left the Clyde on 13 January 1870. A month and two days later, she set sail from London for China. Cutty sark was designed and built by Scott & Linton of Dumbarton for 16,150 pounds. But much of the money was to be paid by Willis when the ship was launched. Just before they finished her, Scott & Linton ran out of money and went bankrupt. She was completed by William Denny & Brothers. The Cutty Sark was the first ship to reach London with a tea cargo in 1877. But she was one of only nine sailing ships that returned that year - in 1870 there had been 59. Steamships were now dominating the tea trade. In 1883 the Cutty Sark joined the booming trade in transporting Australian wool. Every year until 1895 she set out in the summer for Australia, to load a cargo of wool bales and return to England in time for the wool sales ini the first three months of the new year. Cutty Sark soon established herself as the fastest of the wool clippers.
