But to some observers, the general picture was an unattractive one. They saw the unsightly heaps of clay, the trees felled, the dust everywhere in summer and the mud in winter; the flies and the mice. John Owens (1831-1892) was a Welshman who spent 1853-1863 in Australia, predominantly on the Bendigo goldfields.He was a miner who also initially set up a horse drawn puddling machine, although he sold this in 1857. He gave first hand insight into life on the goldfields through letters he wrote home to his parents. He returned to Wales in 1863 and in 1864 he married his uncles widow, Jane Davis. But thereafter, although many continued to do well, the average annual earnings of the diggers declined rapidly. In 1858, when there were over 100,000 diggers in Victoria, few could have been doing really well ; only the hope of a ''lucky strike'' kept many of them on the diggings. The Historically listed Goldmines Hotel is situated opposite the Victoria Diggings site. It was designed by the Bendigo firm of Vahland and Getzchmann for David Chaplin who built the hotel in 1872.Coloured brochure produced by McKean McGregor real estate agency for the sale of the Gold Mines Hotel.
