Animal specimen - Hoary-Headed Grebe, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The Hoary-headed Grebe can be located in all states and territories in Australia as well as New Zealand. These birds are usually found in large open bodies of water away from shorelines. They mainly feed on aquatic arthropods which they catch by deep diving. The Hoary-headed Grebe is bird-like in appearance with darkish grey and white plumage. When threatened while in a flock, these birds often dive beneath the water in a synchronised manoeuvre. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.Hoary-Headed Grebe in a standing position on a wooden platform. The bird is small and stocky, similar to a duck in appearance, with a darkish grey and white plumage. The eyes are made of glass. The bill is black and the legs are a pale yellow/grey. A paper tag is tied to the left leg of the bird. Only half of the tag survives and records: "25a Hoary... Catalogu[e]...". This identifies the bird as a Hoary-Headed Grebe."25a Hoary... Document - Recent Discovery of Human Remains near Goornong
In reprisal for the deaths of five aboriginals of the Taurigurung tribe, aboriginals killed James Neill, hutkeeper and Hugh Bryan, shepherd on 22/5/1832. These men worked on an outstation of Campaspe Plains sheep run owned by Capt. Charles Hutton. The outstation was at Wild Duck Creek. At the same time the aboriginals stole 700 sheep. In response, Hutton led a party that killed 40 aboriginals and found most of the sheep. Another raid with mounted police killed another six. Campaspe Plains was sold in the early 1840's and was broken up into smaller pastoral leases.A collection of three local Police papers detailing the discovery of the human remains of the early settlers James Neill the Hutkeeper and the Shepard Hugh Bryan and the detailed report of their passing caused by local Aboriginals who were threatened by recent expansion.hugh bryan, james neill, police -

Photograph - Image, Lisa Saad, Sigrid Thornton and children at the Melbourne Zoo for the launch of the Feelix library, 12 February 2013
The Feelix library was developed to help children who were blind or have low vision experience the connection with books via tactile objects. Each print book was hand selected, a clear Braille overlay placed on the pages, and items relating to the story were made or purchased and added to the kit. The kit (book and objects) was held inside a cardboard suitcase and sent through the mail in a bright orange, zippered plastic padded pouch with a carry strap. Launched at the Melbourne Zoo on 11 February 2003, ambassador Sigrid Thornton read 'The Story about Ping' by Margery Flack and Kurt Wiese to a group of five children, who played with the other objects in the suitcase as well as those for 'The Tiger who Came to Tea' by Judith Kerr. These included a soft toy duck in bright plaid fabric, a shiny metal tea pot, a cassette recording of the story, tactile books for both stories, and metal cups.37 digital photographs of Sigrid Thornton and five children at launch of Feelix libraryroyal victorian institute for the blind, feelix, sigrid thornton
