Cast Iron lace was made in foundries in most cities. There were 42 such foundries in Melbourne alone. It was cheaper to make than wrought iron. "Pig iron", iron ore, was melted in a blast furnace, mixed with alloys and then poured into moulds usually made of sand. The alloys needed a minimum of 2% carbon.A black and white photograph by Alan Doney of 159 Forest St in Bendigo. Document - BARBARA MAMOUNEY COLLECTION: IMAGE AND OBITUARY OF ANNIE MAVIS WEBSTER MBE
A photocopy of newspaper publication of obituary for Annie Mavis Webster, MBE 21/5/1914 - 8/4/2000 An exceptional singer who contributed greatly to local Bendigo and Australia as well as abroad Bendigo born and raised by Edwin and Annie Webster, Education was at Camp Hill. A life long participation in and commitment to local music and Competition Society provided opportunities for performance. The ultimate prize for amateur singers at the time was the Sun News Pictorial Aria Competition, which Mavis attained as runner up in 1938 and as winner in 1939. Outbreak of WWII curtailed early opportunities for overseas travel but there was much call for her as recitalist, artist and teacher such as at The Sisters of Mercy at St Mary's Convent, Bendigo where she taught singing. Mavis gained impressive reputation and experience in numerous roles including as chorister (and founder of the all female choir and the Benola singers which she also named, after her home), and later (1960) included male voices; she was also conductor; musical director; and adjudicator at Eisteddfords. She laso taught at Girton, St Killian's. During the 1950s Mavis went on a very successful 9 month overseas trip on which she was inspired in many respects including the formation of the choirs. In 1978 Mavis was made a Member of the British Empire for her services to music.City of Greater Bendigo acknowledged Mavis contribution and skills by establishing the Mavis Webster Vocal Collection at the City library.bendigo, history, obituary and biography of annie mavis webster mbe, forest st methodist (now uniting) bendigo, girton, st killian's, herald sun aria, the eisteddford, sisters of mercy at st mary's convent, mavis webster vocal collection, city of greater bendigo, margaret watters. -

Document - BENDIGO GOLDFIELD - HISTORY OF, FOR MELBOURNE EXHIBITION 1880
Yellow covered booklet 'History of the Bendigo Goldfield from its commencement in 1851 to June 1881' Presented with the Eaglehawk Specimen Case and giving a description of its contents, for transmission with the said case to England. Dedicated to G.D. Peters, Esq, London, by Mr. Hay Kirkwood, Eaglehawk. Inside first page ( un-numbered) 'The Bendigo Goldfield Compiled by Messrs Hay Kirkwood and Wm. Welch. The Rise and Progress. At the latter end of 1851, a few enterprising pioneers, with Captain Harrison, now police magistrate of Castlemaine, made their way from Forest Creek ( Castlemaine ) 30 miles distant, to a place on the Bendigo Creek, now called Golden Square, then a squatter's run, where rich auriferous ground was met with. The new soon spread far and near, and the world was soon startled with the intelligence that another very extensive goldfield had been discovered, the importance of which may be gathered from the fact that in the month of June, in the following year, six months after the first sod was raised, 80,000 ounces of pure native gold was taken by Melbourne.Printer: W. Diggers & Mining. The Diggings The Diggers. Slide: MOUNT ALEXANDER. (From our special correspondent) Forest Creek, August 28, 1852. - . . . The diggers at the Bendigo are getting up a subscription for a testimonial for Mr. Gilbert, the Assistant Commissioner there. The present is to be a gold cup, filled with nuggets of gold. Between 200 pounds and 300 pounds has already been subscribed, and from the respect and esteem in which that gentleman is held, there is every prospect of a large amount being speedily obtained . . . I think this will be a lesson for some of our government officials, to bestir themselves and endeavour to merit the esteem of the public. . . . (Argus, September 9, 1852.) Markings: 77 994.LIF:4. The services were repeated in the evening and when the psalms and hymns were sung by the respective assemblages on the slopes of almost every hill, it really put one in mind of what e have been told of primitive times, and the days of our forefathers.
