Photo of Major-General Sir John Gellibrand taken in uniform. He established the Hobart Remembrance Club in 1923, which was an instant success. Gellibrand wrote to Stanley Savige who had been Gellibrand’s Staff Captain and suggested he should do something similar in Melbourne.Of national significance as Gellibrand is considered to have influenced Stanley Savige to commence the process to form Melbourne Legacy in September 1923. The Melbourne artist Alma Agnes Marion Figuerola, was the daughter of Juan Pedro Narciso Figuerola (1869-1919) and Alice Lucinda Walker Hanson (1889-1969). Each of their three daughters grew up to be involved in the arts: Alma as a painter; Carmen Irene (1906-1993) as a short story writer, poet and teacher of dancing; and Sylvia (also Silvia) Lyla Alice (1911-1992) as a composer and cellist. The first art lessons Alma Figuerola received were with Oscar Binder. Later she attended the art school established by the Melbourne 'tonalist' [Duncan] Max Meldrum (1875-1955). She graduated from his school in 1920, participating in her first group exhibition in the same year. Solo exhibitions of her work were to be held in 1933 at the Meldrum Gallery in Elizabeth Street, in 1937 and 1945 at the Athenaeum Gallery at 188 Collins Street, and in 1951 at Georges Gallery in Collins Street. Throughout her extensive career she participated in group exhibitions, usually with artists of the Meldrum School, and as a member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters, of which she was invited to become an associate in 1935. In 1953, her portrait of Professor ES Hills was entered in the Archibald Prize Competition of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. A resident of Kew from the 1930s - 51 Studley Park Road, often with her mother, her sister Carmen, or both - from c.1942 until her death she lived at 'D’Estaville', 7 Barry Street. From the late 1930s she is recorded as actively contributing to the arts at a local level. In 1939 and 1940 she participated in art exhibitions at the Hawthorn Municipal Library organised by Jessie Carbines. From 1944 to 1951 she co-organised successive Kew Arts Festivals, initially in the Presbyterian Church Hall in Highbury Grove and later at the Recreation Hall in Wellington Street. A foundation member of the Kew Historical Society in 1958, Alma Figuerola remained an active member of the Society until her death on 8 December 1970. She predeceased her two sisters who both died in the 1990s and who are buried at Andersons' Creek Cemetery in Warrandyte.Photograph of a group of adults attending an exhibition entitled Artists of Kew. Colonel Tom Price, following a distinguished military career in India, was tasked with raising Victoria's military forces in 1885. The mounted arm was the Victorian Mounted Rifles. Contingents of the VMR served in the South African War 1899-1902. Following Federation, the companies of the VMR became Australian Light Horse regiments. This quartz and bluestone monument pays tribute to James Galloway the founder of the the eight-hour day system that gave workers the right to stop work after 8 hours without any penalty. The system was widely celebrated as a world first and Australia became known as a workingman’s paradise. Eight hour day is translated as: Eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest. In 1880, the 8hr day Anniversary Committee decided to mark the establishment of the 8hrs day by erecting a monument to the memory of the pioneer of the 8hr movement in the colony, James Galloway. The campaign for the Galloway monument was so successful that one year later on 21 April 1881, and after the longest 8hrs day procession to that date, the Mayor of the City, Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred the monument at the foot of Sturt Street, Ballarat. The monument is of historic significance to the people of BallaratGranite spire with four cast iron drinking fountains and marble tablets. The Queensland Musical, Literary and Self Aid Society for the Blind was established on 13 March, 1917. Many children who were blind and who had studied music with Mr Hebert Leon Newman at the 'Queensland Blind, Deaf and Dumb Institution wished to continue after leaving school but could not afford to do so. Mr Olsen, the librarian, who was blind, conceived the formation of a Society to meet this need as well as providing an after work social centre and to address the limited job opportunities available for adults who were blind. The committee of the Blind Deaf and Dumb Institution encouraged the new Society by providing a grand piano and seating accommodation for 100 people in their library. In 1921 he established the John Olsen Literary Competition, then became the Edwin Dickinson Literary Competition and later the Vision Australia Dickinson Literary Awards. Padbury’s Funeral Parlour in Kew was the earliest business of its kind in what is now the City of Boroondara. It was established by John Padbury in 1859. Following his death, the company was renamed A W Padbury & Co. John Padbury was involved in meetings in 1861, calling for Kew to become an independent municipality. In 1863, he argued that a lunatic asylum would bring business to shopkeepers. His company was located at 13 Cotham Road, next to the rear entrance of the Kew Police Station. The two-storey building is still [in 2023] extant. Members of the Padbury family married into a number of pioneer Kew families including the Whitmans and Morgans. The Jubilee of this church was held in 1933. "Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church. BALLARAT, Sunday Jubilee celebrations of the Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church were well attended in the week end. A basket picnic on Saturday at Eureka Stockade reserve was followed at night by a social gathering, at which a birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Amor, a foundation member. On Sunday special services were led by Rev. J. A. Moscript, assisted by the young men of St. John's Church. The church was originally founded, by the late Mrs. J. P. Murray to mission to the needs of the busy mining community which existed in Canadian in early years." (The Age, 06 November 1933.) PATON MEMORIAL CHURCH - An interesting tree-planting ceremony was performed in the grounds of the Paton Memorial Church on Saturday lost. Trees were put in by the scholars of the Sunday school to commemorate the enlistment of all the boys who had in any way been connected with the church. Sunday school, and Young Men's Club. The Mayor (Cr Levy) spoke in terms of praise of the lads who had enlisted to fight for right against might and the tyranny of Prussian militarism. The Hon. R. McGregor MLA., and the Revs. A. H. Moore and W. Rowlands were among those present. on also Mesdames J. P. Murray and McGowan, two of the founders of the church. During the afternoon Cr Levy planted a tree in honor of Mrs Murray. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the congregation. (The Age, 06 November 1933.) This church was in the middle of a Chinese neighbourhood, and the 1800s the leprosarium was in the vicinity. Arthur Dowsey, b. 1899, was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Jane (nee Harding) Dowsey and brother of Ruby May. HE married Una Beryl Whitey in 1925.
