Corporal Francis John Papworth (VX66806) served in the 2/2 Australian Commando Squadron in Timor, New Guinea and Borneo, Tarakan during World War II. His pencil drawn images of the John Viera and his family during 1942. This work of soldiers is significant as a work produced by a serving soldier on location during WWII and is a unique example of an artistic work showing the men and their surroundings at the time. Ruth was designed and carved by Charles Francis Summers, one of five white marble statues housed in the Statuary Pavilion, Ballarat Botanical Gardens. The Pavilion and its statues were unveiled in 1888 by Premier Duncan Gillies, a former colleague of James Russell Thompson whose bequest to the City enabled the purchase, in Italy, of the statues. The Flight from Pompeii and the four accompanying statues are housed in the Statuary Pavilion in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. The Flight from Pompeii, in the centre, was designed by Professor Carlo Benzoni and carved by Charles Francis Summers while the four accompanying statues were all designed and carved by Charles Francis Summers. The octagonal Pavilion was specially designed by T.E. Molloy in 1887 to house the statuary. The five statues and Pavilion are believed to be unique in Australia. The Flight from Pompeii, Modesty, Rebekah, Ruth and Susannah are aesthetically significant as they are a group of statues, which are a fine example of the design of Professor G.M. Benzoni [Flight from Pompeii] and the design and carving of Charles Francis Summers. The carving of the Flight from Pompeii is both sensitive and finely done and both the design and carving of Modesty, Rebekah, Ruth and Susannah is sensitive and delicate with great attention to detail. The group is historically important as it epitomises the 'beautification' of the city in the 1880s by men who made their money from gold and who wished to give to the city money for projects such the statuary Pavilion and its contents. The Flight from Pompeii group is located in the Botanical Gardens, which were then also being developed in the Victorian style. This also illustrates the social feeling of the time in which the wealthy had made their money and were wanting to develop in a most substantial way, as well as to 'beautify' the city in which they lived. The Pavilion, designed by the major Ballarat architect T.E. Molloy, is unusual for its top-lit central lantern and curved roofs. The statues are seen to their best advantage because of the provision of all-round and top natural lighting. Until October last he held the license of the Telegraph Hotel and was a familiar figure in his wheel chair under the shade trees at land at Narrewillock, where he farmed until failing health compelled him to give up the strenuous work of those early pioneering days, and in 1892 he took the license of the Telegraph Hotel which he retained until recently. Thomas William Francis No 2584. Enlisted on 7.7.1915 in 4th reinforcements 29th Batt AIF age 25 years 6 months. Embarked for Eygpt 14.3.16, embark for France 16.6.1916, reported missing 19/20.7.1916, listed as KIA 20.7.16 (Fromelles) no known grave. The photo is one of a number that originally hung in the "Gallery of Honour" foyer of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Pall Mall Bendigo now the Bendigo Military Museum. In 2008 a mass grave was found with 250 remains in. On 12.4.2013 it was announced that the remains of Thomas Francis had been identified. This book was awarded to Lilian Jane Tweedie in 1893 for First prize in Latin (Preparation). Lilian enrolled in Clarendon Ladies' College in April 1891. In the original register it lists parent as William, occupation Barrister and residence as 58 Doveton Street, South Ballarat. Lilian's sibling attending Clarendon Ladies' College is Sarah Florence (enrolled 1884). Siblings attending Ballarat Clarendon College are George (enrolled 1889) and Arthur (enrolled 1885). Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown cloth with gilt decoration and inscription on spine. This book documents the lives of William and Agnes Brebner and family. William’s father, Isaac had come to Warrnambool in the 1860s and had a tailoring business in the town. By the beginning of the 20th century he was the caretaker at the Sea Baths in Gilles Street, Warrnambool and the family lived in the caretaker’s cottage (Les O’Callaghan History House today). William Brebner established a paint shop in Timor Street in 1916 and this prominent business remained in the Brebner family until 1977. It continued in other hands until the early years of the 21st century. This book is of significance as it documents the life and times of William Brebner and his family. The Brebners have been important, particularly in the 20th century, in the business and community world of Warrnambool.This is a soft cover book of 132 pages. It has a blue cover with a black and white photograph of William Brebner and black printing on the front cover. It has four sections – one on the life of William Brebner and his wife and family, one on his ancestors and two on his descendants. At some stage in the photo’s timeline it had information written on the back. It was stuck down, then later removed leaving residue all over the writing making it essentially impossible to read. With the photo was a handwritten note which has been verified is what can be made out on the back of the photo. This note appears to be written to Nellie by Annie Sweeney of Culla Hill, Eltham.
