The accompanying letter says that Miss Enez Domec Carre is in the centre with Legatee Buth in front of her looking between two girls. Also in the picture is Legatee Vines and Legatee 'Grat' Gratten. The photo and letter were sent to Legacy by Val Hutchinson (nee Wigg) and the photo had been forwarded to her by the family of her good friend the late June Whitechurch. An article in the Legacy newsletter of August 1946 says that on 19th may, 90 Junior and Intermediate girls travelled by Red Cross coaches to St Mark's Holiday Camp at Mt Evelyn. The girls were divided into 4 teams distinguished by coloured sashes in Green, Gold, Red and Blue. The teams competed against each other in sports and other activities that were awarded points. A pleasant hike was arranged to Mr Beveridge's Log Cabin which was where Mr Beveridge took this photo.A record of a camp for young girls in 1946. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aim to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp, this is believed to be Somers School Camp. These photos are from 1992. An article in the widows' newsletter in 1992 explains more detail on the 1992 camp. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp. It is a wonderful gathering of Junior Legatees, Legatees, and dedicated helpers. 50 junior legatees attended this camp (in 1992) with the personal attention almost one-to-one. With ages ranging from 22 to into the 60s, Legacy has to ensure it caters for the differing needs. Legatees headed by Camp Chief, Jim Hammon and Chairman of the Handicapped Dependents Committee, Merv Tickell, were supported by two Camp Co-Ordinators and 50 helpers known as 'leaders'. Many of the leaders are people in the workforce wishing to give something back to the community. Junior Legatees are organised into groups. They participate in horse-riding, swimming, golfing, strawberry picking, and many other activities. There was an article about the Anzac Eve ceremony for students. Also holidays essays and photos from holiday camps at Ararat. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. The card was sent by Zali Steggal OAM, a four time Olympian and Australia’s most successful alpine skier. She competed in Winter Olympics at Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994, Nagano 1998, Salt Lake City 2002. After retiring from competitive sport in 2002, Zali studied Law as well as Community Media and Communication. She entered politics as a Federal Government MP in 2019. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This card is significant because it was sent to George Shirling by Australia's most successful alpine skier.A coloured card for the Festive Season sent to George Shirling by Zali Steggal in 2020. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski facilities at Falls Creek.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. The cover features an Eric Burt photo of a skier on the slopes at Hotham. Page 23 gave an outline of some of the activities that had taken place at Falls Creek during the holiday period, including Bob Hymans operating the tow for tourists.
