1860: Kew's first library was the Kew Literary and Scientific Society, which opened on 6 August 1860. 1884: Kew Town Hall was extended and the library transferred to a room on the upper floor. This was not an ideal arrangement as the room was required for Council purposes. 1904: A cottage adjoining Kew Town Hall was purchased for use as a library. 1937: The library was closed for a major overhaul of stock and renovation of the building. It reopened in December 1937 and remained there for more than 35 years. 1973: When the Civic Centre opened in Charles Street, Kew, the library moved in. 1987: Kew Library moved to its current location in the converted city hall, overlooking the beautiful Alexandra Gardens. Mr John Innerarity Buchan, Scottish real estate, and his wife. organised at least 4 known outings at their property - Finhaven - in Studley Park, Kew. Those parties were hosted for Cup Day in 1920, 1922, 1924 and 1928. Mr Buchan died in December 1922, but his wife continued with the tradition. A Junior Legacy Certificate presented to Jacobina Bristol on 12 July 1940. The text says 'During the Great War many men offered themselves for Service in the Forces of the Empire. To assist the children of those who fell, or who have died since, the Melbourne Legacy Club was formed. The Children of deceased sailors and soldiers constitute the Junior Legacy Club.' The certificate was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a girls green tunic uniform, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge. Photos from a reunion of Junior Legatees at Watsonia Barracks in 1991. Photos include Legatee Grattan and Miss Enez Domec-Carre together and with groups of former junior legatees. Also in attendance was Sir Weary Dunlop and Legacy President John Swan (white hair and blue jumper) and his wife. Another photo shows Joan Miller with another lady. Other names unknown. From an article in the Widows' Newsletter in July 1991 it is a Grand Reunion at Watsonia Army Barracks in May for former Junior Legatees. Over 350 people attended. There were games for children, spit roasts and the renewing of friendships between former Junior Legatees and the Legatees. An article in the Herald Sun on Friday 17 May 1991 promoted the event using a photo of Ron Barassi and L/ Chas Munnerley mentioned the reunion was Sunday 19 May (item 01529). The George Hotel in St Kilda was one of the largest and most well known hotels in Victoria and the largest in Melbourne outside the city. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, renamed the Seaview in 1976, it no longer operated as a hotel and fostered Melbourne's alternative and punk music scenes. It was de-licenced and closed in 1987 and redeveloped in the mid 1990s as apartments, with bars, cafes and shops at ground level and an art gallery and cinema. On 6 January 1996, Harry Hogg, a local photographer and a member of the Save St Kilda movement, sent the photographs of the demitasse coffee cup to the new owner of The George, Donlevy Fitzpatrick. His covering letter said: 'The reason for this note is to send you copies of photographs of a fragment of a demitasse coffee cup I unearthed recently from along the light rail in Albert Park. A photo of Legatee Doc Sargeant with a stethoscope looking at a junior legatee in 1954. The girl's badge says her name is Robyn Leggo. Melbourne Legacy began proving medical and dental care for junior legatees in the 1930s. At first Legatees who were professional doctors and dentists provided care free of charge. When size of the demand was realised Melbourne Legacy opened a dental clinic. For many years the dental clinic was run out of Legacy House in Swanston St. The photo appeared in the July 1954 edition of the Legacy Newsletter with the caption "Legatee Doc Sargeant examines a Junior." The accompanying article say that girls joining Legacy are given a medical examination free of charge. A doctor is in attendance on Friday nights when the girls have classes and he may be consulted whenever necessary. Legacy has as it's disposal a large number of specialists .
