b & w photograph, Ballarat Rodeo, 1962
Letter sent with two photographs. Please find enclosed a couple of photos taken in Ballarat in 1962 which came from an album of my mother's Marian Mitchell (nee Robinson). She and some friends were on a road trip across Victoria to New South Wales. You are welcome to reprint these. One is of the Ballarat Rodeo and the other is of mum in the morning at their roadside camp in Ballarat. The sign on the shed has two words, the first one says Caledonia - the second perhaps you'll be able to find out? Both taken in 1962. I hereby give you permission for your society to re-print and distribute both these photos as you choose (although these aren't exactly the most expertly taken pictures). If more come our way over the course of my continued cleaning out of the cupboards I will send these too. Cheers etc3.5" x 5" landscape size black and white photograph showing horses and riders in a rodeo at Ballarat Showgrounds.BALLARAT (front top) Verso: Bronco minus cowboy Ballarat Rodeo 1962 -

The Eureka Flag hanging in the Old Colonists' Hall is an exact replica of the Eureka Flag that flew over the Eureka Stockade. It was copied from the original flag that was in the possession of the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Exact measurements were taken from the flag and the replica made by the Ballarat firm George Lemke and Co. It was decided to made the replica because of the fragile condition of the original flag. At the time the original flag was beyond being displayed and it was felt steps should be taken to obtain a copy before it deteriorated further. Ceramic, Old Ballarat Pottery, Old Ballarat Pottery Jug
Old Ballarat Pottery was set up by John Gilbert as part of the Old Ballarat Village, opposite Sovereign Hill. Gilbert had lectured at Ballarat College of Advanced Education before establishing the Edinburgh Pottery at Sovereign Hill in 1972 to enable visitors to see traditional trades at work. The Old Ballarat Pottery was a much larger concern, producing wares for sale through department stores and on party plan via Faberware as well as through the village. Early works looked as though they might have been made in the 1850s, with unturned bases, crude marks and dark treacle-like glazes. Peter Pilven, one of Gilbert's students, worked there after graduating from the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, teaching throwing to students like the potter John Ferguson, who was there from 1978-79. Potters were initially employed by Gilbert's company Pontresina Pty Ltd, registered in 1973. (The Old Ballarat Pottery was registered as a company from 1984-1994.) Early works are marked with an impressed long-tailed 'B', or an 'OB' on either side of a mine tower. A printed stamp also features a mine tower surrounded by the text 'Old Ballarat Pottery Made in Australia'. Later work is impressed 'Stoneware Old Ballarat Pottery Australia' with a kangaroo.Hand thrown blue glazed jug.Stamped 'Stoneware Old Ballarat Pottery?old ballarat pottery, australian studio pottery, jug, pontresina, ceramics -

I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. Ticket, Ballarat Teachers' College, Ballarat Teachers' College Grand Concert, 1947
The Ballarat Teachers' College was established after the Victorian State Government and the State Education Department decided to establish two provincial teachers' colleges, at Ballarat and Bendigo. On 04 May 1926 W.H. Ellwood (Principal), Miss A. Bouchier, and Mr A.B. Jones, welcomed the first enrolment of 61 students to undertake the one year course. In 1927 the College moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall in Barkly Street, which was remodelled for their use. It closed in December 1931 due to the Great Depression. In 1946 Ballarat Teachers' College reopened and relocated to the Dana Street State School. It was originally planned to open as a women's college, for whom the residence at 130 Victoria Street was purchased, but the decision was made to admit resident men from Ballarat. Mr T.W. Turner was appointed as Principal in 1951 and directed the introduction of a two year course for the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate. The former one year course was terminated at the end of 1951. In 1958 the College was relocated to a custom built facility at Gillies Street, in close proximity to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Numbers increased with the introduction of the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate course under the guidance of Mary Egan. With the introduction of a three year Diploma Course in 1968 accommodation became cramped. The introduction of the Diploma of Teaching (Primary) led to the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate being discontinued in 1969, and the end of the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate in 1969. Secondary Art and Craft students began studies at Ballarat Teachers' College in 1969 under Mr Ted Doney. In 1971 Mr D. Watson was appointed Principal. The State College of Victoria was proclaimed by Order in Council on 24 July 1973, and Ballarat Teachers' College became a constituent college of the State College of Victoria, and was known as State College of Victoria, Ballarat. By 1975 the College moved to Mount Helen as part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Pre service teachers currently undertake their studies on the Mount Helen Campus of Federation University. Letter - Correspondence, Neville Bunning: Ballarat Art Society Proposal, 1946
Neville Bunning was a staffmember at the Ballarat Technical Art School. Two page hand written letter relating to setting up a Ballarat Art Society. From Neville Bunning to the Ballarat Art Gallery.604 Dana Street Ballarat 20th Aug 46 The Secretary Ballarat Art Gallery Dear Sir, I submit the attached proposition for the formation of the Ballarat Art Society. I am convinced that it is needed as an outlet of expression for teh Art School and for the development of sculpture and Painting in Ballarat. I have taken the liberty of suggesting that your committee shld form the society because I imaginbe that a society formed withou your support would be unlikely to succeed. If it failed it would mean a set-back for many years. U trust that you will be interested in the proposition Yours faithfully Neville M.
