Functional object - Well and pump
The pump was restored by Alan Mitchell who was an employee of Zerbe Engineering, Ashburn Place, Blackburn. The work was carried out by Alan in their workshop.The pump was patented by Joseph W. Douglas, Middletown Conn. and the patent was assigned to W & B Douglas.A reconstructed well of red bricks. Circular, dome shaped, it has a grill on the flat top of the dome on which the force pump is situated next to the grill. It circulates the water which is held in a tank beneath the brick structure. The force pump is hand operated with a replacement handle made c1965 by Alan Mitchell who restored and donated the pump. She was the first Australian woman judge, and the first woman to be a Queen's Counsel, a chancellor of an Australian university and the Governor of an Australian state. Administrative record - T.C. Watts and Son rent book
Thomas Couch Watts c. 1865 - 30/10/1914 was a Bendigo Real Estate Agent, initially in View St and later at 253 Mitchell Street. He married Alice Maud Glasier in 1888. His son Raymond Leigh Watts b. 1894 was admitted as a partner in the business in 1915 when he qualified as an Insurance Agent. Raymond died in 1929 aged 35. Thomas became an auctioneer and Real Estate Agent c. 1904 after initially running a book and stationery store in View Street with his brother Edward. Thomas and his family resided at "Ottawa" in Rowan Street, Bendigo.Green hardcover ledger book. The ledger has 354 pages and it lists the name, addresses and the amount of rent received. They sold out to Cobb & Co in 1874. Mitchell & Co started a line in opposition in 1880. Coaches ceased to run when the railway was opened at the end of 1882. Alexander Mitchell, grazier and citizen soldier of Thoona, Victoria. Enlisted as a trooper in Victorian Mounted Rifles in September 1893. Commissioned second Lieutenant July 1908. Appointed Captain 13th Light Horse AIF 21July 1915. Seconded to 28th Infantry Battalion in France, May - October 1918, Awarded DSO. Following the War rejoined CMF as Commanding Officer 8th Light Horse and later 2nd Light Horse Brigade.Complements collection of medals and memorabilia listed as item 4244.Typewritten letter on Australian Imperial Force 130 Horseferry Road Westminister Road SW1 letterhead and signed by General W. Birdwood. The letter is dated 9 June 1919 and congratulates Major Alexander Mitchell on being awarded the Distinguished Service Order ( DSO ) -
