In the period 5-20 March 1988, ‘A’ Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles participated in an exercise conducted at Puckapunyal by 4th Infantry Brigade (Reserve) codenamed ‘Fiery Cauldron’. Other units participating included 5th/6th Battalion and 8th/7th Battalion Royal Victorian Regiment, 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment and 1st Armoured Regiment. The training focussed on armoured/infantry cooperation, in particular the use of armoured personnel carriers. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion and deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. The regiment was disbanded at the end of the war, 1945. 20th Light horse was the only light horse unit to serve overseas in WWII. William Hill Irvine came from Northern Ireland around 1879 and lived in Heidelberg. He became a barrister and Member for Flinders Electorate, serving at various times as Attorney-General, Chief Justice, Premier and Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria. His daughter Beatrice married James Morrison and lived in Eltham. Irvine's other children were William and Agnes. William became Crown Prosecutor. Agnes married Ian Hayward and moved to Adelaide. Beatrice worked with the War Service Committee, raising money for the Red Cross and became chairman of the War Memorial Committee which built the Baby Health Centre, the Children's Library and the Pre-School Centre in Eltham. The family were interlinked with other local people. Contents Document by Beatrice W Morrison, 8 May no year given but pre 1989: life of Sir William Hill Irvine, his daughter Beatrice Wanliss Morrison and her husband James Morrison, and memories of Eltham and residents. This magazine promotes the protection of wildlife and the need for proper management of national parks. Its editor Crosbie Morrison lobbied for a National Parks Authority which was finally set up under Morrison's directorship in 1957. During the 1940's and 1950's Crosbie Morrison (1900 - 1958) became Australia's best known naturalist. As a journalist with commercial radio and the Australian Broadcasting Commission, he made regular national nature study broadcasts to schools and other radio listeners for 20 years. He was the editor of Wild Life, a magazine which fostered interest in Australia's natural history and conservation, from 1938-54. (ref.
