In 1972 when the uniforms changed from traditional to more modern trend they created interest for prospective trainee nurses. The dragon is the symbol for the Canungra Jungle Training Centre in Queensland. Soldiers were sent here to prepare for fighting in the South West Pacific. The Centre was first established during the 1950's and 60's and is still used today as Australian Army training establishment. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo.
