Altona is a suburb of Melbourne, 13 km south-west of Melbourne's CBD and located within the City of Hobsons Bay Altona Police Station opened as a temporary police station in 1919 in the Melbourne District. It was on the corner Sargood and Blyth Streets. It was staffed by one 1st Constable. The original police station was in a small room attached to the front of a 5-roomed weather-board dwelling with an iron roof on land measuring 66' x 165'. There was also a kitchen, vestibule, wash-house, office, one W.C. and a lock-up. In 1929 it became part of the Bourke District. On 31 March 1958 it moved into newly built government premises at 51-53 Blyth Street, on the corner of Bent Street. The building consisted of a cream brick veneer police residence and police station with cell. Staff was increased to a Sergeant in Charge and 3 Constables. A new police station was opened in Altona North on 7th October 1979. The Altona Police Station remained as a sub-station for a few a short time until the building was sold. July 2019 - a new police station is being constructed at 1 Galvin Street, Altona. Aitken's Gap, otherwise known as The Gap or Buttlejork, and 3km west of Sunbury, was established as a township in 1845. It is in the area which is now bordered by the Calder Highway and Gap Road. The village was named after John Aitken, a Port Phillip pastoralist who took up the Mount Aitken run in 1836. Aitken's Gap Police Barracks (in the District of Bourke) opened in 1853 and was staffed by two Mounted Constables and one Foot Constable. The gaol (used to house prisoners and also gold en route to Melbourne) was built in 1857 from bluestone quarried in the area. The roof was made of slate. In 1861 it was staffed by 1 Mounted Senior Constable and 1 Foot Constable. The Barracks closed in 1863 when the Bendigo rail line was completed and the gold was transported to Melbourne by rail. All the buildings, except the gaol, were moved to Sunbury. The land was sold in 1870 and in 1989 the current owner donated the building to the Sunbury Police. Apsley is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is on the Wimmera Highway, in the Shire of West Wimmera, 420 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, and 7 kilometres east of the South Australian border. Apsley Police Station opened on 29th November 1884 and was originally located in Wallace Street. It was staffed by one Foot Constable (motor cycle). The building was described, in 1930, as a four-roomed dwelling with an iron roof, set on a quarter of an acre of land. There was a bathroom, a WC, wash-house and a garage. An office adjoined the house and there was also a lockup. The station moved several times until the mid 1960s when a timber residence was moved onto land adjacent to the Post Office. The building is believed to have been transported from the Stawell area. Apsley is one of a handful of one-man police stations in Victoria and its current location, including residence, is at 19 Splatt Street. Miss Harriet (Minnie) Williams's Cash Drapery Mart (est. 1902 and enlarged in 1906), also known as Eltham House on the right. Harriet (Minnie) Williams was born London, 1857, the daughter of George John Williams (1812-1895) and Jane Mansfield (1812-1895). In September 1885 she was operating Williams’s Drapery Establishment in premises on Main Road owned by R. Wallis who advertised them to let in September 1885. In 1902 she opened Williams’s Cash Drapery Mart at the southwest corner of Bridge Street and Main Road (opposite the Post Office), owned by W.J. Taylor. In 1906 she bought the premises and one quarter acre of land and expanded the business with a re-opening in April 1906. Harriet was also well-known and esteemed as an active worker in Methodist circles and also Superintendent of the Sunday School. Harriet fell ill in August 1907 and died 15 August. She is buried in Eltham Cemetery with her good friend Ada Ford. Note also the gas street lamp on right. Watson's Hotel on corner of Pitt Street visible in distance. The CBA bank building is hidden behind trees, the chimney and part roof visible. For over three years Miss Williams has carried on a drapery business in very small and inconvenient premises opposite the Eltham post-office. Recently she bought the building and a quarter-acre of land from Mr. W. J. Taylor. Thus having a free hand, she at once matured plans to enlarge and improve the premises to make them suitable for her growing business. The result being that she consulted Mr Roach, contractor, of Heidelberg, put the matter in his hands, and now he has completed in a very satisfactory manner and up-to-date style extensive improvements. A large addition, of very neat and attractive design, with three large windows, has been built right along the front of the old building, and the counters and inside fittings are very neat and convenient, harmonizing well with the attractive outside appearance. Miss Williams has now got in a large now stock of goods, and is making extensive arrangements for a “reopening week," commencing 2nd April, during which time she will make 10 per cent reduction on all cash purchases in the form of gifts of that value. Miss Williams has gone to considerable expense and liability both, in the enlargement and improvement of the premises and in purchasing additional stock. We therefore trust that the public will stand by her by heartily and en masse patronizing her re-opening effort to show their appreciation of pluck in this advance movement. The Shrine of Remembrance was created to meet the needs of a grieving community after the extensive loss of lives in the First World War (1914 –18). sixteen dark Buchan marble Ionic columns. In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland. The Eltham Hardware and Timber Company first opened on Main Road opposite the Railway Station around late 1922. An advertisement placed in the Hurstbridge Advertiser advised that the Hardware Store had just opened with a varied stock of Saws, Hammers, Nails, Shovels, Screw Drivers, and every article required in a house or on a farm. People were also encouraged to try their Jams, Pickles, Sauces, Cups and Saucers, etc. A few months later in May 1923, William Walker, a plumber, placed an advertisement wishing to to announce that he had taken over the ELTHAM HARDWARE STORE, and asked for the continued support of the district. He also noted that all kinds of Plumbing work was done. Walker remained the proprietor of the Hardware Store for many years regularly advertising its services and wares up until at least 1941. The trail goes a bit quiet then but he does appear in the 1944 Electoral Roll listed as a Plumber, of Main Street, Eltham. However he is not listed in the 1949 Electoral Roll but his son, Thomas Roy Walker, also a plumber of Main Road is listed. Thomas had been on active duty overseas during the Second World War and returned at the end of 1945. It is assumed that William died sometime between 1945 and 1949. On November 18th, 1950 the Hardware Store and residence was auctioned on site by Scarff Bros. Pty Ltd. It is presumed that this is when J.N. Burgoyne and Sons took over the business. It would have been around this time the picture of the store was taken for only three years later, in October 1953, the business and dwelling was again put up for sale, this time by Trebilcock Bros, in two separate lots.
