Surrey Hills Historical Society CollectionMedallion, AMOR MINT, 1951
The letters J.W. E. refer to the artist - John Wolfgang Elischer (1891-1966). He was an Austrian sculptor and medallist. He trained at the Academy of Vienna from 1908 to 1911; won the Prix de Rome in 1909; and c1910-11, practised under Rodin in Paris. He arrived in Australia in 1935. During his first year he was an industrial designer for pottery. Later works include the King George V Memorial in Bendigo (1938), a bronze fountain for Sir Russell Grimwade in Toorak and a bust of Archbishop Mannix for Newman College, University of Melbourne. The medal was awarded to the school children in 1951 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Federation of Australia. The design was chosen after a competition, with the valuable cash prize of two hundred guineas. This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all with connections to the SUrrey Hills and Mont Albert area.This is one example of the work of Amor Mint. In 1874 Willliam Joseph Amor was apprenticed to English medallists J.S. and A.B. Wyon. Nine years later he went to Paris, where he remained until 1887. Intending to go to America and work his way home to England, he visited Sydney en route and was persuaded by Robert Hunt, Deputy-Master of the Sydney Mint, to stay and start his own business. Amor established the business in 1888 and married the daughter of the Chief Engineer of the Sydney Mint. In 1917 Amor became a limited company, in which principal employees were given an interest. In 1935 Amor sold his share to A.H. Byatt, retaining a position as Advisory Director of the business. Amor’s company became Sydney’s major medallist and die-sinker for over a century thanks to its ability to meet demand for locally produced, high-quality commemoratives.A round medallion with a loop hole at the top. This medal was awarded to the school children of Australia in 1951 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Federation of Australia. The design was chosen after a competition, with the valuable cash prize of two hundred guineas. It was won by John Wolfgang Elischer for his depiction of a man hand-sowing wheat. The wheat has grown to represent the seven States of Australia on the other side of the medal. Elischer was an Austrian sculptor and an Associate of the Royal Academy who arrived in Australia in 1935. During his first year he was an industrial designer for pottery. Elischer, P. Hurry and John Farmer together held an exhibition of works at the Athenaeum, Melbourne, in June 1937. Elischer later received commissions for sculptures including the King George V Memorial in Bendigo (1938), a bronze fountain for Sir Russell Grimwade in Toorak and a bust of Archbishop Mannix for Newman College, University of Melbourne. Professor David Battersby, AM, PHD (Waikato), MHED (UNSW), Vice-Chancellor of University of Ballarat, now Federation University Australia, from July 2006 to 2016. Professor Battersby is a graduate with first class honours from the University of New South Wales and recipient of a Commonwealth Fellowship. He was awarded his PHD in the field of Sociology from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Professor Battersby has been the recipient of numerous academic awards, including Commonwealth Relations Trust, and the Australian-Japan Foundation. He has been a Visiting Professor at universities in a number of countries and undertaken consultancies for UNESCO, OECD and a number of government agencies. Professor David Battersby was the Head of the Albury Wodonga Campus from 2000 to December 2003 and was also the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Charles Sturt University until 2006, when he took up his appointment at the University of Ballarat. Charles Sturt University has named its annual prize for leadership and good citizenship within the student body, in honour of Professor Battersby. For services to Tertiary Education as a Senior Academic and Administrator, Professor Battersby received the Order of Australia Medal in July 2015. Professor Battersby has served as a member of the Board of IDP Education Ltd, he recently stepped down as the Chair of Education Australia Limited. He is a Founding Chair of Regional Universities Network and Founding Chair of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka. Ludmilla Meilerts, Oil On Board, Botanical Gardens, Circa 1970 Ludmilla Meilerts (1908 - 1997), Botanical Gardens, Melbourne, an impressive work painted with bold brushstrokes and a vivid colourful palette which typifies the artists work. Born in Riga,Latvia in 1908 - After displaying an early talent for art she studied at The Latvian Academy Of Fine Arts graduating in 1940. Later that year she married Otto Meilerts, an Economist, and they moved to Stuttgart, Germany to avoid living under Soviet occupation and then emigrated to Australia in 1948 settling in Melbourne. She worked as a nurse's aid and in a clothing factory to fund the further development of her artistic career achieving considerable early success with her colourful work encompassing portraiture, florals and city and landscapes. She particularly like painting dockland scenes. She was a member of The Victorian Artists Society (VAS) and The Melbourne Society Of Woman Painters And Sculptors. Major prizes include The Dunlop Prize in 1952, Gosford Art prize 1971, Camberwell 1973, VAS Purstitz Gold Medal 1982. She is represented in The State Galleries of Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and Western Australia as well as several regional Galleries. Still life of fruit and a jog. Painted in thick impasto paint, creating a very textured surface. Fruit is depicted in green, brown, apricot, pink and red. Background is abstract. Upper left background is brown, upper centre and right background is in shades of grey, blue and green, with some white. This is a portrait of former ANZCA President, Associate Professor Richard Walsh. In 1996, he was elected Vice President and, in 1998 was elected President, serving a full two year term. This painting was formally presented to the College in 2006. He is most famous for his 2006 winning entry of the prestigious Sir John Sulman Prize in which he painted a portrait of Pope Francis which was presented to His Holiness in 2014.
