All from The Courier, unless noted otherwise. 1 - "Bus v Tram" - 10-2-1962 - letter - from M Stewart of Sydney, say that the move to buses as in Sydney should not be allowed to happen. 2 - "Tram Facts" - 13-2-62 - letter - about the need for a private operator to run at a profit, higher fares - a public authority would maintain concession fares. 3 - "On the Lines" - 13-2-62 - letter - supporting the trammies. 4 - "Bendigo Meeting Moves to Retain Trams" - 12-3-62 - reporting on a meeting of 11-2-62- in Bendigo, well attended. Demonstrates how tram tickets could be punched and the manufacture of ticket punches.Brass cast, chrome plated, machined, device or ticket punch, used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Placed a round hole in the ticket. Spring loaded, consists of two main parts with a pin & spring in addition. . Chrome plate has been partly worn off. Secured by three screws. For another example see Reg Item 7468 with large screws. There are no manufacturer markings or numbers on the punch. Demonstrates an item that all SEC Ballarat tram crews carried, a simple key to open/close the doors and has a strong association with a SEC Ballarat tram crew member.T-shaped steel piece, fashioned from rod and welded at the top, with a round top piece or handle with a rod that has been ground to give a tapered square shape for use in external doors on SECV Ballarat Trams - known as a square key. Demonstrates the safety record of the SEC Ballarat depot, has a strong association with the workers and Yields information about their performance and dates.Timber framed box, glass fronted, Masonite back, painted black on the edges and front with a slot on the underside and metal catch screwed to the timber that allowed a preprinted poster to be slid out from the base. The poster titled "Our Safe Working Days Score", provided with secured to the poster, four metal sheets pressed with three rounded edges to allow a paper strip to be slid in from the right hand side and secured. Poster has been preprinted for the SEC Electricity Supply Department". Badge - SEC pass, AMOR, Employees Pass badge No. 166, c1950?
Stamped enamelled round brass piece with a hole stamped at the top and ring placed through. Used as a SEC tramways employees pass. Has the SEC logo in the centre, organisational name (State Electricity Commission of Victoria) in white enamelled and outer ring the words "Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways". This was in blue enamel. On rear stamped the number "166" and on base of badge letter "AMOR", assuming indicating who manufactured the badge. Is believed to be issued to Mr. Norm Pearson, Administrative Officer of the SEC. Thirty two page landscape booklet on semi gloss white paper with off white cover and single supplementary white sheet tipped onto the inside of the front cover titled "See Melbourne's Beautiful Beaches and Garden Suburbs from a Special Bus". Saddle stapled, printed letterpress. Text printed in black and green ink. Cover green ink only. The book advertising MMTB's Special tourist bus, giving overall tour details on page 1, including fares, time of departures and reservations. Each tour has a map showing the route, details of the tour route with notes and photographs. Page 14 shows a maximum traction tram on the reserved track in Dandenong road and page 30, W2 488 outbound in Victoria Parade. Page 32 has an advertisement for the Round Trip by Tram 1/-. Front cover has details of the departure times and fares and a photo of the Tourist Bus. The supplementary sheet has been prepared for the tours that operated daily from Sun Sept. 17 to Friday May 31, except Anzac Day. Preprinted Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board form with rounded corners, as a Certificate of Service for Leslie James Denmead, dated 29 Dec. 1948. Form 3/278, July 1947 typed with Name, positions held and dates From to Until. All entries have been underlined in red. Gives date of leaving, conduct and service ("Excellent") and signatures of person and Manager. Held positions of Conductor, Bus Driver, Bus starter, Inspector. Signed by L. J. Denmead and by J. Rigaldi (?) District Officer, for the Manager, F. G. Wraith. Sheet has a watermark "BANK M EXTRA STRONG" Not in good condition, has been repaired with 'sticky tape' and is torn. Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "CARLTON ST. CAR SHED LOOP." stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. The part with the words "CAR SHED LOOP" appears to have been ground down and a previous location name taken out and replaced. Used a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. Booklet with blue Rexene cover and round corners on heavy card with sheet of paper glued on inside of covers and 32 printed pages stapled with in, titled "Instruction for the Guidance of Employees working on or within reach of Live Low Voltage Conductors". Also possibly known as the "L.V. Blue Book" - see top of definitions page. Dated 1949. Above title has name of the organisation - SECV - Electricity Supply Department. Inside front cover has space to record name and occupation of person issued to. In bottom left hand corner has form number "596-210 R2" Has been stamped "L. J. Denmead" by a hand stamped in blue ink and words "Departmental Tramway Supt." written in using blue ink. Badge - SEC pass - set of 12, AMOR, c1940?
Set of 12 Stamped enamelled round brass pieces with a hole stamped at the top and ring placed through. Used as a SEC tramways employees pass for either all Provincial tramways, Geelong, Ballarat or Bendigo only. All badges have the SEC logo in the centre, organisational name (State Electricity Commission of Victoria) in white enamel and outer ring the words "Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways", or "Electric Tramways Ballarat" or "Electric Tramways Bendigo" or "Electric Tramways Geelong". This is in blue enamel. On the rear are stamped numbers and manufacturers name - "AMOR MELB" or "STOKES & SONS MELBOURNE" in the bottom portion of the pass, except .9 which is "STOKES" only. Taken with part of another tram cabin in the foreground - assume 988. Geoff Grant's envelope notes state "1003 swinging round the curve into Gertrude St. This then took over the running honour of being the first tram over the Bourke St. route."
