The Volunteers Air Observers was formed in 1941 with the aim of observing aircraft flying over Australia. There were over 24000 civilians volunteering their services and as the military threat to Australia subsided they took on roles as coast and weather watching. This certificate was presented to Miss S. McDonald of Warrnambool.A common item presented to people who contributed to the defence of Australia while in a civilian role.Cream paper with aircraft and Union Jack flags at top with man and woman in between with Royal Australian Air Force insignia below. This series of photographs captures life at sea and the conditions on the ship M/S "Mongabarra" in 1950. This photograph was reproduced and exhibited by the Mission to Seafarers as part of the exhibition "Letters from Abroad" in 2012.This photograph is part of the Allan Quinn collection, which is a pictorial autobiography, and it represents one of many moments of his time abroad as a seafarer.Black and white photograph of the M/S "Mongabarra" Goteborg in Eriksbergs dockyard, Gothenburg, Sweden.
