Administrative record - Journal, Peacock Bros Pty Ltd, "Franking machine Record", 1938 to 1942
Printed as a specific accounting Journal by the SECV for use in its offices to record the use of the Franking Machine or Postage Machine. The machine would be preloaded with a value at the post office after a cheque for 25 pounds was presented and then used to send out accounts, and letters from the mail room. Used when all power invoices were mailed to customers. Also records the use of stamps. Has the initials of the person who would audit or check the monthly entries. Used in the days when stamps were considered a valuable commodity and to stop pilfering. See item 5639 for a franked envelope sent from the SECV's Ballarat office to Wal Jack.Demonstrates record keeping of a franking machine record used in the SECV Ballarat office during the late 1930s and early 1940s.Printed as an accounting journal with heavy card covers, approx 50 pages, ruled in red and blue ink, completed in black ink. The journal is titled "Tranking Machine Record" in a gold block. Has marbled endpapers, sewn sections, and fawn colour cotton sheet cover with leather edge binding and corners with a decorative finish. Contains entries for monthly records of Units generated and consumed in the Ballarat SECV district from July 1956. For each month to July 1960, records power generated, load factors, maximum demands, traction power, public lighting, domestic, industrial, and commercial, and total sales and for auxiliary equipment at the power stations. From August 1960 to Dec. 1962 duplicated sheets titled "Energy Statistics" that do not give data for sales. See item 9542 for data from Nov. 1949 to June 1956. Ballarat A Power Station not recorded generating during Dec. 1956 then not every month during 1957. Some use during the winter of 1958. Provides a set of rules for horse drivers and conductors for the Ballarat Tramway Co. Note the spelling for the company name with a single "a" rather than the "aa" in Ballarat. Has two tear-out slips that were to be signed by either the conductor or the car driver. Gives 17 rules for drivers and 18 rules for conductors. Printed by F W Niven of Ballarat.Yields information about the rules that the conductors and drivers of the Ballarat horse trams operated under.Bound book, green gold block titled "Ballarat Tramway Company, Rules for Drivers and Conductors", 12 pages + two perforated sheets that could be torn out and signed. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways management system of Conductors rosters interfacing with Drivers during the last full period of operation of the tramway from March 1970. Shows the services and how the various run or crew tables were arranged in relation to the overall timetable.Handwritten sheet on graph paper for Weekdays and Saturdays Rosters for the arrangement on Mt Pleasant - Gardens, Victoria St - Gardens and Lydiard St Nth - Sebastopol routes. Gives the various run numbers, sign on location, trip take times, notes on what to do with trams, sign off times, interface with other runs. Shows the full service where conductors were used and how the various run or crew tables were arranged. See Reg item 3429 for Drivers table. Topics covered - tyres and wheel centres, truck maintenance, suspension bearings, bearing metal (white metal), motor armatures, carbon brushes, air receivers, overhead equipment, tracks, car renovation - painting, gold lining, roof, floor treatment and covering, trolley wheels, purchase requisitions, spare parts, supplies, brake shoes, timber, castings, tramway drawings, patterns and a summary of action. Also includes notes on tramway statistics, employee's duties, one man operation, track drains, interchange of ideas and experiences and discussions of a general nature and notes on scrapping trams in badly damaged condition. Each item where relevant looks back at the actions from the previous conference.
