... st andrew's church of england brighton victoria... henry dendy's special survey 1841 wilmot w b md jp st andrew's ...The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Jim Dale continued to produce the Newsletter in 2013 after Helen resigned. 3 x A4 paper pages printed on one side with colour photographs, Jim Dale, President, welcomes members to the April 27th Meeting at Box Cottage. There were many visitors on the February Open Day including Jeff Marriot. In March some guests from a Wedding at the Rotunda in Joyce Park visited. Chris and Judy Hawker, relatives of early aviator Harry Hawker were presented to Her Excellency, the Governor General of Australia, Quentin Bryce during the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show, held at Point Cook on March1st & 2nd. Jim representing CMHS attended this memorable occasion. Jim also attended Moorabbin Primary School March 3rd where he told the pupils about Harry Hawker. March 22nd Jim, Valma and Anne attended the Moorabbin Primary School Fete handing out leaflets and talking about Box Cottage Museum. City of Glen Eira is conducting a project for WW1 Centenary involving significant Street names in the area eg Monash, Chauvel, Birdwood etc. Jim has compiled a story about Thomas Calcutt 1809 - 45, a shepherd who emigrated from Oxford, England to Brighton Victoria 1842. He was part of the Henry Dendy 's assignment of settlers. Thomas obtained employment with Public Works and lived in Brighton with his family. Sadly he died during the 6km walk home from his work in St Kilda to Brighton 1845. After a 2 day search his body was found. She came to Warrnambool in 1901 and studied art and became an art teacher and artist. She moved to Echuca and then Ararat where she set up a school called The Pathfinder. She became well known as an artist and exhibited her work in the Victorian Artists Exhibitions. In 1922 she married Jesse Bail and had one child named Jessica . Several of her paintings are in the Warrnambool and District Historical Society collection.This book is of considerable interest because of its connection to a Warrnambool artist.This a soft covered book of 88 pages. It has a blue cover with black printing and an image of a weaving loom. It contains printed material and many illustrations and diagrams. Harkness was Mayor of the City of Bendigo when St Andrew's ...Abraham Harkness was Mayor of the City of Bendigo when St Andrew's Presbyterian Church school hall was erected. The foundation stone was laid on Wednesday the 15th March 1899 to much ceremony including hymns and speeches. Abraham Harkness had arrived in Victoria in 1857 aged 28. He was initially successful in his search for gold and after a return trip to England in 1862 returned to Bendigo were he opened a general store and then a foundry whereby his company manufactured mining machinery. He stood for council from in 1880 and was elected a further eight times over the next twenty years. Cr Harkness served as Mayor in 1882, 1897 and 1898. His son Andrew became Mayor in 1908-09. Abraham Harkness married Jane Noble in Bendigo in1864 and together they had six sons and five daughters. Abraham died in 1912 and Jane in 1927.Sterling Silver ceremonial trowel with silver collar and bone handle. Front surface is ornately engraved with fern leaf pattern scrolled around central middle section which holds the engraved dedication. Back section is plain. Engraved: PRESENTED / TO / A. HARKNESS. There is a tradition that on being sentenced to death, he requested that he be crucified on a saltire (diagonal cross, see base of window) as he felt unworthy to be crucified on the vertical cross of Christ. Another symbol of association with St Andrew is the fishing net.The Rev. Andrew Peacock, Archdeacon of the Otways, was the fourth Vicar (1906-1912) of the Parish of Warrnambool. He was highly regarded throughout the community and died following a very short illness. His brother, Sir Alexander Peacock, three times premier of Victoria, officially unveiled a tablet on the north-west corner of the Parish Hall complex on Saturday 25th April and attended the dedication of the memorial window on Sunday 26th April 1913. Rev AE Peacock is buried at Creswick cemetery, Victoria. -
