Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. The Internment Camp currency was manufactured for use in the camps by the internees. It is an example of the ingenuity of the internees in making use of anything at hand & repurposing it for much more than originally intended. Else's daughter, Else-Lore Hukins donated the items. Penny with small metal bar soldered to back ("one penny" side). Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in the same compound as many Italians, and so took up Italian lessons. This book is one she used in these lessons. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, from 1940-1945. The ballerina & stand were made by persons unknown & given to Else-Lore while in the camp & was one of her childhood 'treasures'.Hand painted thin plywood decoration of ballerina inside a ring / circle, with wooden stand. Outer circle shape with insert for stand, cut out of ballerina posed inside. All carved from one piece of plywood. Circle is painted purple. Ballerina inside circle is plain plywood painted with mainly yellow, blue & white costume. Stand is flat disc with slot for ballerina cutout to insert into. Stand is painted gold.
