This book gives details on the lives of the artists Rex Battarbee and Albert Namatjira. It is written by Martin Edmonds. The book explores the relationship between the two artists and the effect on each other of artistic philosophies and techniques, described as each being ‘a catalyst and a primer for the other, each shimmering alongside the other’. This book is of considerable interest as Rex Battarbee was born and reared in Warrnambool and his older sister Florinda was his first art teacher and an important influence in his artistic development. She was also a talented artist and a well-known art teacher in Warrnambool and many of her works survive. The Warrnambool Art Gallery holds works by both Rex and Florinda Battarbee, with the works of the latter belonging to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The Battarbee family members were prominent in Warrnambool business and artistic circles at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Rex’s father was a shopkeeper and had a bacon and ham curing business and the family lived in East Warrnambool at ‘Skiddaw’. This is a soft cover book of 342 pages. It tells the stories of the artists Rex Battarbee and Albert Namatjira. It contains a Contents page, an Introduction, ten chapters, a Note on Sources and Acknowledgements. In 1909, assistant Chaplain Rev. Haire presented the Mission with an 'uncommonly artistic pulpit' in memory of his mother. This pulpit sits in The Chapel of Saint Peter, which belongs to the State Heritage listed (H1496) Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex. The dedication was performed by the Archbishop of Melbourne on the 26th January.Only one other 'maritime inspired' pulpit of a similar vintage is known in Australia, gifted to the Australian National Maritime Museum by the Mission to Seafarers, Sydney. Local resident Deborah Halpern is a highly recognised and respected contemporary artist with an acclaimed national and international reputation in the arts community. She has a strong artistic connection to the area as her parents were founding members of Potters Cottage - a group of local ceramicists who were influential in the development of ceramics in Australia. Deborah Halpern donated Wayfarer through the Australian Government Cultural Gift Program. A cubist inspired kinetic work in three parts, the artwork depicts a semi abstract figure, a ‘traveller’ made out of reflective mirror and colourful ceramic tiles. Wayfarer is an excellent example of Halpern’s tile construction technique and playful style that she is renowned for. This diorama is the focal point the Prisoner of War Gallery. It was originally designed and installed by a collaborative group of artists and craftsmen, all themselves former Prisoners of War in 1995. Bamboo for the display and replica prosthetics was sourced from Thailand. The mannequins are artistic interpretations of identified POW surgical staff and doctors. The original display was moved and reassembled during the Gallery redevelopment process in 2015. This money box is believed to be an antique Prattware piece modelled on a n English Methodist Chapel. It was a gift to a young girl, Sarah Ann Esam born in 1850 in Lincoln, England. Her parents John and Ann Esam emigrated to Australia in 1865 with six children one of whom was Sarah. John Esam became well known in Warrnambool as an engineer and windmill maker. His best known windmill is the one he made for "Lyndoch". Sarah Ann Esam died in Henna Street, Warrnambool in April 1915 on Easter Monday. This money box is of considerable significance because of its age, its artistic attractiveness and its connection to the Esam family who were prominent in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This glazed piece of pottery is a child's money box modelled on an English Methodist Chapel. It has a blue tiled roof with yellow edges, a slot for coins at the back.and two chimneys at each end of the building. The primary colour of the cottage is white It has two storeys, the upper one has six lead light windows framed with yellow and the ground storey has two brown doors with lead light fan windows. There is a pink colored figure standing in one corner of the base. The base is green representing grass. The edges of the base feature blue crosses interspersed with yellow dots. West Of Eden is the result of an artistic residency at the Western Treatment Plant that took place over three months in 2015. The residency set out to open the minds of the broader community and challenge some of its perceptions to the Plant. This work highlights the natural beauty of the Plant while embracing the fact that, in many ways, this land is not natural at all.
