Small white programme with scalloped edge on three sides for Progressive Euchre Party and Cinderella Dance, held at the Masonic Hall, Friday 24th Aug., 1900. Bendigo Philharmonic Society. Front card has embossed daisies and an embossed square on the front. Also the names of the Conductor, Mr. A. G. Finster; the President, His Worship the Mayor Cr. S. H. McGowan and Hon. Secretary, J. Williamson. The second card has the dance programme with the names of the dances and engagements and the names of ladies and gentlemen who contributed items during the evening. They were Miss E. Collins, Mr. R. W. Norton, Miss L. Jenkins and Mr. Howell. Gold printing on the cards. On the back is an area for Progressive Eucra Score with three red embossed stick on circles. S Coleridge-Taylor's adaptation of Longfellow's poem, 'Hiawatha,' is a three-part Cantata, comprising the above two sections and 'Hiawatha's Depature.' Frequently the work is given abridged. The composer was an Englishman of African decent, and this, perhaps, led him to take such a keen interest in American Indian legends and negro folk songs. The Orchestral Society of the Young Men's Christian Association exists for the uplift of Bendigo through the agency of music. In addition to this it dedicates the whole of its profits to the extension of Christ's work among Boys. Surely this two-fold object is sufficient to warrant a large number of subscribers, and yet we regret to say we find it increasingly difficult to finance the Society, and our Association, in one to the greatest provincial cities in Australia. We would like to think that it is only sufficient to mention this matter in order to call for an immediate demand for subscribers tickets for our Orchestral Society; in order to remove the 'Damoclesian sword' of finance which perpetually suspended above our heads, and thereby insure a continuance of our Orchestral Society, and the permanence of out Association, which is in business for the men and boys of this fair City. During the war he was an officiating Chaplin to the RAF Father MacEwan's normal duties as a parish priest . . . John Douglas Todd Tasmanian born in Tasmaniabut lived most of his life in Sydney. The letter is from Allan Wilkie who has sent $10 to cover his subscription to the Historical Society and he enclosed the 38th Battalion AIF booklet on the Presentation of Colors.
