This uniform was worn by members of 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles from its formation in 1948 until replaced by battle dress and braided yellow lanyard. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. The black tank suits were first issued to members of 8/13 VMR in 1959 and were worn till late 1960s when they were replaced by a similar garment coloured green. The one piece purpose designed overall was a welcome replacement for the khaki drill trousers and jacket which had been worn by crewmen since 1948. Owned by Martin Balsarini, a resident of Chiltern Valley, for use in WW1. Service Number 1682. Martin Balsarini enlisted on the 21/7/1915 and served with the 4th Australian Lighthorse, AIF. He participated in what is known as the last great cavalry charge, the charge of the 4th Australian Lighthorse at Beersheba on the 31/10/1917.
