It is believed that is item was constructed by a veteran in the 1920s. An identical cenotaph to that in Whitehall, London was constructed outside Parliament house in Spring st Melbourne,Australia.This model could be an engineering model for our Spring st version. please contact Caulfield RSL if you have more information. A highly accurate well detailed brass scale model,22 cm high of the original first world war memorial the "Cenotaph" at Whitehall London the UKs national war memorial. An identical cenotaph was constructed outside Parliament house in Spring st Melbourne, Australia.The design is made up of a rectangular base a broad pillar and the cenotaph or coffin on top of the pillar. 3 wreaths also feature, 2 on the narrower sides of the pillar with the years 1914 and 1918 and one wreath on top of the coffin. It has 2 coats of paint on it the second(exposed) being a poor uneven coat of, off white gloss enamel, possibly just house paint.No makers marks or date can be found on the exterior of the model. Visible are the words " THE GLORIOUS DEAD" on each of the narrow sides of the model above each wreath is a year in Roman numerals.One side side for the beggining of world war one "MCMXIV" 1914 and "MCMXIX" 1919 for the official endcenotaph, whitehall

Private James Argent (318), served with the No. 8 Platoon, B. Company, 21st Battalion, 6th Brigade, 2nd Division. He was born in Yandoit, and was a 24 year old labourer when her enlised for service at Kingston on 20 April 2015 during World War One. HIs next of kin was his wife Harriett Argent of Kooroocheang, Victoria. He was wounded in Acton at France on 04 July 1914, and had shell shock for the second occation on 03 August 1916. On 22 August 1916 he embarked on the "Denis" for England suffering from Shell Shock. He was transefered permanently to Base in England on 18 June 1917. He was admitted to hospital with VD on 21 August 1917 (63 days), and sailed for Austrlalia on 30 January 1918 with Neurasthenia. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The British War Medal was instituted on 26 July 1919 for award to those who had rendered service between 5 August 1914, the day following the British declaration of war against the German Empire, and the armistice of 11 November 1918, both dates inclusive. The 13th Light Horse Regiment (AIF) was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in March 1915. Following service at Gallipoli the regiment was broken up with squadrons going to France as Divisional Cavalry Squadrons of 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisions. The regiment was reformed as firstly 1st Anzac Corps Mounted Troops and later Australian Corps Mounted Troops. The regiment was raised as 13th Light Horse (Gippsland), a Citizen Forces unit. following WWI, and trained as a cavalry regiment till August 1940, when it converted from horse to mechanised initially as 13th Motor Regiment then 13th Armoured Regiment. It trained in Victoria and, as the Japanese threat to the mainland declined, was disbanded in October 1943 with men going to other units..
