The British War Medal was instituted on 26 July 1919 for award to those who had rendered service between 5 August 1914, the day following the British declaration of war against the German Empire, and the armistice of 11 November 1918, both dates inclusive. The 13th Light Horse Regiment (AIF) was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in March 1915. Following service at Gallipoli the regiment was broken up with squadrons going to France as Divisional Cavalry Squadrons of 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisions. The regiment was reformed as firstly 1st Anzac Corps Mounted Troops and later Australian Corps Mounted Troops. The regiment was raised as 13th Light Horse (Gippsland), a Citizen Forces unit. following WWI, and trained as a cavalry regiment till August 1940, when it converted from horse to mechanised initially as 13th Motor Regiment then 13th Armoured Regiment. It trained in Victoria and, as the Japanese threat to the mainland declined, was disbanded in October 1943 with men going to other units.. It is believed that is item was constructed by a veteran in the 1920s. An identical cenotaph to that in Whitehall, London was constructed outside Parliament house in Spring st Melbourne,Australia.This model could be an engineering model for our Spring st version. please contact Caulfield RSL if you have more information. A highly accurate well detailed brass scale model,22 cm high of the original first world war memorial the "Cenotaph" at Whitehall London the UKs national war memorial. An identical cenotaph was constructed outside Parliament house in Spring st Melbourne, Australia.The design is made up of a rectangular base a broad pillar and the cenotaph or coffin on top of the pillar. 3 wreaths also feature, 2 on the narrower sides of the pillar with the years 1914 and 1918 and one wreath on top of the coffin. It has 2 coats of paint on it the second(exposed) being a poor uneven coat of, off white gloss enamel, possibly just house paint.No makers marks or date can be found on the exterior of the model. Visible are the words " THE GLORIOUS DEAD" on each of the narrow sides of the model above each wreath is a year in Roman numerals.One side side for the beggining of world war one "MCMXIV" 1914 and "MCMXIX" 1919 for the official endcenotaph, whitehall

This newspaper was sent by the Shire President Cr F. Deery from Bairnsdale to P.C. Cameron, Orbost Shire President. It was sent on the first aeroplane to arrive in Orbost. The Commonwealth plane in the charge of Lieut. Oakes landed in Mr McPhee's paddock at Newmerella. It left for Sale on the same day.The purpose of the plane's visit was to raise subscriptions towards the WW1 peace loan. In July 1909, a modest 12-page booklet was put together by members of the fledgling Old Ruytonians Association (ORA) and distributed to the Ruyton Girls' School community. It was one of their first projects, and their aim was to nurture continuing interest in the School among former and current students. They named it "The Ruytonian." At first, The Ruytonian was produced twice yearly, and always bore a plain cover with a simple name banner. Initially, it was the work of volunteer editors from the ORA, but in 1913 they handed the publication over to the first student editors, Esther Gibson and Lucy Tickell. Since that time, the style and content of The Ruytonian has continuously evolved. The biggest shifts occurred in 1942 when it transitioned to a yearly publication, and in 1969 when it moved to a larger A4 format with a cover image specifically selected for that year.The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Due to the age of the record dating back to 1914, we can infer it is one of the few remaining complete, intact and original examples of The Ruytonian from this period. Therefore, it can be considered an outstanding representation of its type, and is a reference example for research in early Victorian school history.
