Photograph - Army Survey Regiment Open Day - Map Production, Fortuna, Bendigo, 1990
These 35 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. Refer to items 6434.27P and 6436.18P for more photos of the Open Day taken inside Fortuna, the garden areas and production areas of Lithographic Squadron. At that time the area had many orchards that were later replaced by market gardens. J.L.Smith at first rented a cottage 'Law Muir Den' & Shed from Mr Box and commenced business as a wood merchant - sawing logs into shorter pieces using one horse to power the saw. He purchased the property, added to the buildings , began trading in fuel and fodder as well and installed a chaff cutting mill powered by 10hp steam engine. The business prospered 1909 following the death of Tommy Bent, J/L Smith was nominated for Councillor of the Shire of Moorabbin. The Grain Store was managed by family until 1930. In 1932 JL Smith assisted a man whose car had broken down, pushing it to the garage and sadly suffered a heart attack and died. He is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery. In the photograph are: Dolly Broome; Mary Reynolds; Lily Perry; Hilda Guy; Rene Parker; Madge Grose; Audrey Cameron; Annie Gibbs, Zenie Irvine and Violet Gibbs. This is probably the song connected with a poem called “In Flanders Fields” written by Major John McCrae, a Canadian surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade and stationed at Ypres salient, Belgium, in the spring of 1915. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948. Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . It is the sole senior educational institution. Document, A Service of Intercession, 1915
This is a programme for a Service of Intercession in Relation to the War. It was held by the Methodist Church (Victoria and Tasmania Conference) in October 1915. The Wesleyan Methodist Conference at Birmingham, England requested that Sunday October 31st 1915 be set aside as a Day of Thanksgiving and Intercession throughout Britain and all other countries in the British Empire. The service was held to seek Divine intercession and aid for those on active military service in World War One and for the families of these men and women. This programme is of interest as the 1915 service would have been held in Methodist Churches throughout Victoria and Tasmania and this would have included the Warrnambool Methodist Church. World War One was a highly significant event in the history of Australia and Warrnambool, along with all other places in Australia, was affected deeply by the war with many young local people enlisting and many dying on active service. These are two sheets of paper folded in two to make eight pages. The pages contain a programme for the Methodist Church service in October 1915. The printing is in blue on a whitish/bluish background. The front cover is edged with blue lines. There is a blue stamp of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society on the front cover. The programme has been stapled but the staples have been removed. methodist church, world war one -

Photograph - ANZAC Day 1990, 1990
The interest in this picture is the two ex servicemen are wearing the Gallipoli Star. This decoration was approved by King George V to be awarded to Australian and New Zealanders who landed on the Peninsula. After much controversy the medal was not issued. In 1990, however, a private issue of these medals were commissioned and 200 of the medals were given to the surviving Gallipoli veterans to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the landing of the ANZACs as Gallipoli. This photograph is of two veterans and their attendants at the Gallipoli Memorial Service 1990.
