Ruyton Girls' School
Magazine, Ruyton Girls' School, The Ruytonian, 1956
In July 1909, a modest 12-page booklet was put together by members of the fledgling Old Ruytonians Association (ORA) and distributed to the Ruyton Girls' School community. It was one of their first projects, and their aim was to nurture continuing interest in the School among former and current students. They named it "The Ruytonian." At first, The Ruytonian was produced twice yearly, and always bore a plain cover with a simple name banner. Initially, it was the work of volunteer editors from the ORA, but in 1913 they handed the publication over to the first student editors, Esther Gibson and Lucy Tickell. Since that time, the style and content of The Ruytonian has continuously evolved. The biggest shifts occurred in 1942 when it transitioned to a yearly publication, and in 1969 when it moved to a larger A4 format with a cover image specifically selected for that year. The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Due to the age of the record dating back to 1956, we can infer it is one of the few remaining complete, intact and original examples of The Ruytonian from this period. Therefore, it can be considered an outstanding representation of its type, and is a reference example for research in early Victorian school history. The record's significance is further enhanced by its exceptionally well-documented provenance, having remained the property of Ruyton Girls' School since its production.Colour publication and printed on papyrus coloured paper. 69 pages.Front Cover: RUYTON GIRLS' SCHOOL / THE / RUYTONIAN / RECTE ET FIDELITER / DECEMBER, 1956 /ruyton girls' school, the ruytonian, kew, old ruytonians association, yearbook, school, publication, girls school, junior school, senior school, journal, students, teacher -

Photograph, Kew Light Opera Company, The Maid of the Mountains, 1956
The Kew Light Opera Company was formed in 1952, and mounted a number of musical and variety productions each year until it was subsumed in the "Q" Theatre Guild in 1957. A partial record of performances by the company includes: 1952 Florodora, 1953 The Cingalee - San Toy or The Emperor's Own, 1954 While the Sun Shines - A Country Girl - Our Miss Gibbs, 1955 The Toreador - The Arcadians, 1956 The Maid of the Mountains - Whiteoaks - Goodnight Vienna!, 1957 A Country Girl. Most of the Company's performances took place in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, Kew. The scrapbook of annotated photographs, programmes, and newspaper reviews of which this item is a part was assembled by Marion Tilley, wardrobe mistress for, and performer in, productions by the Kew Light Opera Company and the "Q" Theatre Guild. It is significant as a remarkably complete document of theatre performances in Kew, Victoria during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook, and the items individually catalogued within it, have artistic and aesthetic significance within the history of performing arts in Victoria in the middle of the 20th Century. They have social significance in that they reveal socio-cultural values and preoccupations during the period. The records also act as a history of arts activities in the Kew Recreation Hall and later in the Kew City Hall as entertainment and community arts and music precincts.Sepia toned photograph of performers in The Maid of the Mountains, performed in the Kew Recreation Hall in May and June 1956. The Maid of the Mountains, called in its original score a musical play, is an operetta or musical comedy in three acts. The music was by Harold Fraser-Simson, with additional music by James W. Tate, lyrics by Harry Graham and additional lyrics by Frank Clifford Harris and Valentine. For the Kew production, the scenery was executed by James L. Alexander and the wardrobe supplied by J.C. Williamson. performing arts -- kew (vic.), scrapbooks, marion tilley collection, kew light opera company, kew recreation hall, musical comedy -- melbourne -- victoria -

Photograph - Reproduction, Queenscliff fishing boats welcome the American Fleet
On Saturday 29 August 1908, over 100 years ago, 16 American battleships along with 5 various escorts entered Port Phillips Bay. Thousands flocked with excitement along the coast and to Port Melbourne to see the white painted ships and their sailors disembarked. The Fleet’s Mission, ordered by President Theodore Roosevelt, was to make friendly courtesy visits to countries while obviously displaying new U.S. naval power. Invited by Alfred Deakin to the young federation, who was feeling isolated and vulnerable after the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, the visit was a first step in the shaping of the relationship between the US and Australia. And also an impetus to create the Australian Navy in 1911.A photograph of an original photograph depicting the Queenscliff fishing fleet out welcoming the incoming American fleet on Saturday 29 August 1908.Queenscliff fishing boats welcoming the American Fleetthe americcan fleet, the great white fleet, theodore roosevelt, alfred duncan, australian navy 1911 -

Audio - Audio Recording, Peter Pidgeon; J.H. Clark Photos, 13 Aug 2022
EDHS Newsletter No. 265 August 2022 We are fortunate to have in our collection a wide range of early images of the Eltham district. Some of these are part of the Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection (SEPP) held in partnership between the Eltham District Historical Society and the Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library). Some are part of the group of photographs collected when the Pioneers and Painters book was published to commemorate the 1971 centenary of the Shire of Eltham. A prominent photographer of some of these early images is John Henry (Harry) Clark, whose background story is detailed in the article on page 7 of this newsletter. We are indebted to him for recording places and people that now are treasured reflections of days gone by. At our meeting at 2.00pm on Saturday 13th August 2022, we will explore some selected Clark images from our collection and with some try to show the current locations where these were taken.1:07:53 duration Digital MP3 file; 23.3MB Also PowerPoint presentation (compressed)audio recording, eltham district historical society, meeting, society meeting, eltham, j.h. clark photo, peter pidgeon -
