The photograph was taken at the 1992 IPS Bursary awards. Ioannis Coutsouvelis was a bursary recipient. He is photographed with his parents, George & Spyridoula and sisters Anastasia & Ioanna. Tony Drakopoulos, president of the IPS is in the photograph together with Anastasios Tamis (second from right) and George Papadopoulos (far right). Spyridoula became president of the IPS in 2000, the second woman to hold this position. In 1987 Panoyiannis Raftopoulos proposed to the IPS Executive the introduction of Tertiary Bursaries to recognise and encourage academic achievement amongst young people of Ithacan descent. Introduced in 1988, the highest achieving Year 12 students (male and female) received an award. The awards continue to this day and are now known as the 'Year 12 Awards' and all students who successfully complete 12 are recognised. George Papadopoulos, whose father was a founding member of the Society, was active in many areas of public life and a member of numerous community and welfare organisations, including Chair of the Victorian Ethnic Affairs Commission. In 2013 he was awarded the Order of Australia (AO) for his significant contribution to the multicultural community of Victoria.A coloured photograph of 8 people ( 5 men, 2 females and 1young girl) standing in a room. The group pictured are young Ithacan girls who were taught by Olga Black and they are wearing the traditional Ithacan dress. The group performed at various IPS events including the annual ball, Christmas parties. Both Olga and her sister Nina, taught Greek dancing to many people over the years, both Greek and non Greek. Many young Australian born people of Ithacan descent develop a greater appreciation and awareness of the Greek and Ithacan culture through learning traditional dances.A coloured photograph of a dancing group dressed in a Greek costumes. Front row - Antoni Razos, Maria Dellas, Sia Andrews (President), Helen Vlass, Nick LourantosAlthough women played a very active role in the organisation of social functions and fund raising activities, they were not eligible to become full members until 1985 after which they could also be elected to the executive committee. Prior to this there was a Ladies' Committee formed in 1944 which organised social events. Sia Andrews, Maria Dellas and Helen Vlass were the first women to be elected to the executive committee in 1985. In 1991, in the Society's 75th year, Sia Andrews became the first female president. In the 1980s the Ithacan Philanthropic Society held a reunion of Greek Australian women who attended the Emily McPherson College in Melbourne between mostly between the 1930s - 1950s . The college which opened in 1927 was renowned for its training in domestic arts. Here the girls honed their cooking and needlework skills. Up until the 1950s most young Ithacan girls were not encouraged to consider a profession or to pursue further study. Following a few years of secondary schooling many attended Emily McPherson College where they pursued domestic arts courses. -

The photograph was taken when Kalypso Sofianos (nee Raftopoulos), seated in the front, was presented with her Honorary Life Membership of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society on the 4 June 1995. She is surrounded by her family: Front, her son and daughter Spiros (Pip) Sofianos and Nina Mills. At the back from L-R: Theone Sofianos, Kevin Mills, Eva Mills and Nick and Lynne Sofarnos. Kalypso arrived in Australia in 1936 from Ithaca and in 1937 she married Dimitrios Sofianos, also from Ithaca.The Honorary Membership is awarded to long time active members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in recognition of their years of service they have given to the Society and the wider community. Over the years the club has held many successful social functions for members at Ithaca House. During 1960s the Ithacan Philanthropic Society held regular dances on Tuesday nights at their club rooms which were very popular. The dances were held on Tuesday nights because many of the members were either stall holders in local markets or had fruit shops in the suburbs and they did not have to start early the following morning because the retail market was closed on Wednesdays.A black and white photograph of four ladies and four men with three girls seated around a table at a social function. -

Henry Box ,who was born in Withyham in 1839 , was the 3rd son of George and Mary Cripps Box and came to Australia in 1856 with the family. Henry paid his own fare so was not ‘bound’ to any employer. Henry helped his brother William establish his market garden on the site of Box Cottage, Jasper Road 1865 and by 1970 was purchasing property in East Brighton (Bentleigh.). He continued to purchase land, which he rent / leased to family members, and at his death owned property in East Boundary Road, Murrumbeena and Elsternwick. Henry married Elizabeth ‘Emma’ Ward in 1868 and they had 9 children but 2 died in infancy. ‘ Emma’ was the daughter of William Ward 1820- 1908 who was born in Norfolk and emigrated with his wife Ann Ostler in 1853. William Ward JP was a prominent figure in East Brighton . William was elected to the Moorabbin Road Board in 1863, JP at Cheltenham Court, and Shire President 1875-82. He was appointed Post Master at East Brighton in 1865 and held the position until his death in 1908 Henry was a member of the Court Pride of St George AOF, and a lay preacher at the Bentleigh Baptist Church.. Surviving Children were - Caroline Alma Box 1863-1943, Mary Anne Box 1865- ?, Lydia Elizabeth Box 1867- 1957, William Henry Box 1869- 1945, Emma Elizabeth Ellen Box 1875 – 1964, Olivia Christina ‘Chrissie’ Box 1878 – 1963, Archibald Ward Box 1882 -? Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . William Box who with his wife Elizabeth Avis Box and 13 children lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841 . Henry Box, a brother of William Box, was born in Withyham, Sussex and came to Australia with his parents George and Mary Box and siblings in 1856. He purchased property and helped the family establish market gardens in East Brighton (Bentleigh). Henry and his wife Elizabeth Emma Ward Box had 9 children, Henry was a lay preacher for the Baptist Church Bentleigh. Inscribed in Album “ The early photos in this album were found by Mr (Laurie) Lewis when he was demolishing the Old Box Cottage. He gave them to Mrs Avis Box Eldridge who in turn gave them to me. They were not identified. I believe they rightly belong in the Cottage. Bruce Hutton of Almond Glass Works designed the stained glass window and did the hand painting for the Chapel in St John of God, Ballarat. Almond Glassworks was responsible for the overall construction and installation of the window. The concept was developed with the then head of mission, Maureen Waddington. The window was installed on the 30th of October 2019. Almond Glassworks was founded by Bruce Hutton in 1994. He completed a Fine Arts Degree (Chisholm Institute of Technology) majoring in stained glass in 1988, he then went on to work in the industry both in Australia, England and South Africa. He completed a Postgraduate (Monash University) in 1996, focusing on the conservation and restoration techniques of stained glass. No 1 Molesworth Street was at one stage the home of our member Elizabeth Mackie. She believed the house, like Mynda at 5 Molesworth Street was designed by the architect Lloyd Tayler. William Box was born in 1834 in Withyham , Sussex England and married Elizabeth Avis Box in 185. They sailed to Australia in1855 aboard the SS Omega. At first they rented and then purchased land on Jasper Road East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841. An early settlers’ Cottage on the site became their home and they farmed the land while raising 13 children. The Cottage was extended as required. In 1984 that early settler cottage was found in a dilapidated state by Laurie Lewis, in his Timber Yard in Jasper Rd Ormond.. The Moorabbin City Council, Federal Government, Mr Lewis and CMHS members reconstructed the Cottage in 1985 . Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 .
