Document, Citizens' Committee A Concept For Melbourne Legacy
This document was sent from Sydney Legacy to assist Melbourne Legacy with fund raising. In 1974 Sydney Legacy raised $4,070 using this technique, and $163,883 in 1984 . The Citizens Committee was made up of non Legatees who were prominent within the business community. A prominent leader of industry was selected to chair the committee. The committee only met three times a year. The document sets out in detail the formation of the Torch Appeal Committee, Format of the invitation, Programme for the luncheon, Table lay out for the Official Top Table, Publicity, and 5 general points to be noted. Although being separate entities, Legacy clubs all over Australia were prepared to share their ideas with other Legacy Clubs and thoughts for the common good.White foolscap paper with black typeTop left hand corner, blue biro L/ R Foskett, pencil, P.T/. 8901517 Top right hand side, blue biro, Ring P.D. Photograph, Junior Legacy Classes, 1953
A photo of Legacy President Neville visiting group of young legatees at a gymnastics class in Footscray. There are 12 boys, of various ages, in gymnastics gear, some holding books or certificates. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. Many were published in the September 1953 newsletter. The caption for this photo was : President Legatee S Neville having an informal talk with new Junior Legatees of Footscray class following presentation of Certificates and the coverted badges of Junior Legacy.A record of a way Legacy provided classes for junior legatees.Black and white photo of Legacy boys class talking to a man.Printed on the back 'Footscray'. Names on the reverse of the photo L to R: Doreen Devlin, Geraldine Grant, Rosemary Gale, Lee Henneberry, Rod McKinnon, Self, Kevin Heath, Betty Henderson. June Brook, Stephanie, Gordon, Elizabeth Brown, Anne Righetti. Jacky Parry. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until December 1966. Photograph, Legacy 'Mother' to Twenty Three, 1959
A photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. This photo shows Matron Dorrie Vines with three residents. Names around the photo L to R: Lee Henneberry, Doreen Devlin, and Betty Henderson. The newspaper article from The Age was published on 28 August 1959 and mentions Miss Vines has worked at Stanhope since 1946 when she returned from war service. She had been a trained nurse and served in Middle East and New Guinea with the RAANC. She had been awarded the medal of an Associate of the Royal Red Cross and was mentioned in despatches. Mention of the routine of the house include that the girls sleep in large airy bedrooms which they look after themselves. They generally do their own washing and ironing. There is a well equiped sewing room where they can make their own clothes. There is a radio and television and piano though between 7 and 9pm is quiet study time. A legacy member joins them for dinner most evenings and the girls do their own washing up. They can cook in the kitchen if they wish. There is staff of an assistant matron, a cook and two housemaids. Girls have picnics and outings arranged and three or four times a year and they have informal dances at Stanhope. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01834. Document, President's Fund, 1935
... Handwritten 'Letter never cent' in pencil and signed 'R M... and signed 'R M Hall' in black ink. The President's Fund was created ...The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. The letter dated 16 March 1935 was to the trustees of the Howard and Georgina Benevolent Fund outlines the way the fund was to be used at the President's discretion within the guidelines provided by Legatee Berry. That included members of Melbourne Legacy Club or Junior Legatees, or any returned soldier that couldn't obtain help anywhere else. From the pencil note it was never sent. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. The folder was marked with H40 which is part of an early archive project from the late 1960s and early 1970s.The President's Fund was a significant help to legatees and junior legatees who were unable to obtain help from other sources.White Legacy letterhead with black type, a letter from President Hall to The Trustees of the Howard and Georgina Berry Fund. Photograph, Frank Boase, Intermediate Legacy Conference, Adelaide, Easter 1948, 1948
A photo of the delegates and senior observers of the Intermediate Legacy Club Conference held in Adelaide during Easter 1948. The attendees came from different cities, including Melbourne, Hobart, Geelong, Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, Adelaide and Brisbane. The names include: R Cumming, E Brown, H B Murn, A Lawson, C J Merefield, L Rolls, E B Hills, K Trevaskis, C Lee, J Yeates, V A Poulson, C Dodd, F Halliday, H H Kirkwood, R A Rowe, S Deverell, W McDougall, K Bremner, R Gammon, J Byrne, W A Ford, J Couch, B Roston, A Gale, J D Harvey, B Fennell, T Rowatt, J Murray, M Mead. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy.A record of an intermediate Legacy Conference in 1948. Photograph
This photograph was taken in April 2004, on the field day in Mount Pilot-Chiltern National Park as part of a workshop on quolls, led by Andrew Murray, then president of the South East Forests Spot-Tailed Quoll Working Group. IThis event was prompted by a desire to find out if quolls still lived in Mount Pilot-Chiltern National Park, as there had been no confirmed sightings since the 2003 bushfires. Andy Murray helped lead the efforts to find them. Currently, landcare group efforts have found evidence of a small but present spot-tailed quoll population in the park. Reasons for the decrease in population include fox populations in the area and destruction of habitat. Pictured, L-R: unknown, Andy Murray, unknown, Jerry Alexander, Geoff Galbraith, Mary Prowse The spotted-tailed quoll, also called the Tiger Quoll, is an endangered Australian animal. It is the largest carnivorous mammal in Australia, and is native to Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania. Slightly larger than a cat, the animals fur is normally brown, with black marking and white spots. Currently, there are approximately 14,000 spotted-tailed quolls in the wild. This photograph is significant as an example of events used by the Wooragee Landcare Group to inform the public on local environmental issues, and for its link to the hunt for the spotted-tailed quoll.Landscape colour photgraph printed on gloss paper.
