Book, J.H. Williams, Elephant Bill, 1956
Though he was officially known as Lt. Colonel J.H. Williams, the author was known to the world at large as Elephant Bill. That is because he spent 25 years living with the elephants in the mountains and forests of Burma. There he trained them to haul teak logs out of the isolated jungles. Yet this is also a story of great courage because when the Second World War struck, it also came to Burma. The Japanese Imperial Army planned to confiscate the Burmese elephants, drafting them to make the bridges and railways they needed to invade India. When he learned of these plans to put his beloved animals to a war-like purpose, Elephant Bill knew what had to be done. The mighty kings of the jungle had to be evacuated to safety. Elephant Bill is thus the story not only of the peaceful days in the jungle, starting in 1921, but also the story of the largest elephant rescue in history. It tells the amazing account of how Elephant Bill, along with his friends and family, rode 45 of the great beasts across the mountains of Burma, before reaching safety in faraway India. A collection of poems written over a period of 20 years, based on the author's experiences as he travelled in north eastern Victoria, NSW and southern Queensland. Many of the verses are based on events which took place at Perry's Blazing Stump Hotel at Bandiana near Wodonga, Victoria. The "Blazing Stump" got its name from the custom of early travellers bringing a log or stump to the fire to keep it burning for the next campers. Book - Leichhardt the Dauntless Explorer, Colin Roderick, 1988
Ludwig Leichhardt (1813 -1848) is known as one of the most individualistic of Australian explorers. This is the first substantial account of his life and work, based on his diaries, logs and field books. Leichhardt's accomplishments have been uncarefully handled by many researchers and much hearsay and supposition has marred the record of the explorer's life. Not assisting in these efforts is the fact that his journals and logbooks were all written in the Gothic form of the German language and have been largely indecipherable and, in places, open to misinterpretation. With the publication of this volume, the story has been set straight. Using unprecedented access to Leichhardt's writings, including his personal correspondence, the author throws new light upon the scandals and defamations which historians - many with vested interests - have heaped upon him. It also includes Leichhardt’s observations of Aboriginal culture round Durundur Station; references to meetings with groups by 1844-1845 expedition to Port Essington; predominantly friendly relations with tribes; instruction in bush foods and medicines; Koko-Pera attack; appendix includes table of Tribal areas traversed 1844-5.non-fictionLudwig Leichhardt (1813 -1848) is known as one of the most individualistic of Australian explorers. Wooragee Landcare Group
Photograph, circa April 2003
This is a photograph taken in the Chiltern - Mount Pilot National Park near Chiltern in Victoria. On this day, the Wooragee Landcare Group was in the national park looking for signs of the tiger quoll. Tiger quolls can be found in few places with the Chiltern - Mount Pilot National Park being one of them. This photograph is of a tiger quoll nesting site as tiger quolls often nest between large rocks. This image also shows the damage caused by the 2003 bushfires. These bushfires happened at the same time as the 2003 Alpine bushfires. This bushfire started by lightning and quickly became the largest fire in Victoria since the 1939 Black Friday bushfires. The Alpine bushfires destroyed 1.3 million hectares and burnt for 59 days before it could be controlled. The 2003 bushfires severely damaged the environment and concern was raised about the safety of tiger quoll. This photograph displays how the nesting site was damaged by the fire. This meant that the quoll itself could have also been impacted by the fire. Hence why the Wooragee Landcare group went for a search for signs of the quoll. This photograph is significant because it shows a tiger quoll nesting site. Tiger quolls are a highly valuable species because they live in very few places. This, in turn, makes their nesting site valuable. This photograph also signifies the impact of the 2003 bushfires on the Chiltern - Mount Pilot National Park. The image displays burnt trees which makes it clear that the fire was deeply damaging. The fallen log over the nesting site demonstrates how the bushfire must of put the tiger quolls at risk because of how the fire damaged their nesting site.
