The bronze statue of a horse commemorates poet and horseman Adam Lindsay Gordon and the horses and mules killed during WWI. The statue depicts a horse going into battle known as a 'charger' mounted on a base of Warrenheip granite. During World War II the artist, Raymond Ewers was made an official war artist with the rank of lieutenant. Funds were raised from visitors to the Adam Lindsay Gordon cottage for the artwork which was unveiled on the centenary of the poet's arrival in Ballarat. Adam Lindsay Gordon the English born Australian poet spent some time in Ballarat, at one stage owning and running Craig's Stables in the city. He was not a very good businessman and his ventures left him in financial ruin. However his ballads and poems were recognized around the world as strong lines that told the story of the Australian bush. He is the only Australian Poet to be memorialized in Westminster Abbey, UK. This nightgown is believed to have belonged to Mrs Thomas Anne Ward Cole, an early Brighton resident and wife of George Ward Cole. The item appears to have been made or altered to accommodate a pregnant belly, however purpose made maternity clothing was not common at this time. Mrs Ward-Cole’s six pregnancies took place in 1843, 1844, 1845, 1847, 1849 and 1851. The style of this garment in particular the shape of the sleeves would indicate that it is most likely to have been constructed in circa 1860, so whilst it appears to be a maternity item, and historically has been referred to as thus, this purpose cannot be confirmed. George Ward Cole was an early member of the Victorian Parliament and the family featured prominently in Melbourne Society in their time. They established a substantial home known as “St Ninians” at 10 Miller Street in 1841. The family reportedly entertained Melbourne’s first Royal visitor The Duke Of Edinburgh, Queen Victoria’s second son, at St Ninians in 1867. In later years St Ninians was subsequently subdivided and later demolishedA hand sewn ivory cotton muslin nightgown, c. 1842–1850. The bodice is made of delicately embroidered muslin in a floral design. The open flat collar features a scalloped lace frill underneath. The bodice fastens with thirteen mother of pearl buttons down the centre front. After the fourth button, the remaining buttons are concealed beneath a full gathered modesty skirt, which falls from just below the bust line. The modesty panel is secured horizontally across the bodice by six mother of pearl buttons. The sleeves finish over the back and palm of the hand in two flattened peaks. The front of the gown consisting of the modesty front is full length. The modesty gown at both sides joins two panels that are an integrated part of the bodice. At the centre back there is a very full gathered panel with lace trim that falls to create a train. It is semi-attached to the bodice with a top section secured with mother of pearl buttons and small ties. Thousands of volunteers work tirelessly to conserve and protect the environment of Geelong and the Bellarine. Their work often goes unnoticed. In 'The Work of Nature' the National Wool Museum and the Environment Department at the City of Greater Geelong worked with photographer Nicole Marie to showcase the significant contribution of environment volunteers in our region. Each of the eight people showcased in these portraits were nominated by their peers and members of the community for their significant contribution to conserving and protecting the environment. Jon Duthie - Friends of the Bluff Sometimes the work that volunteer groups put in to bringing back nature goes completely unnoticed. When Jon and his colleagues began work at the Barwon Bluff the site was largely devoid of any vegetation. Today most new residents and visitors to Barwon Heads don’t even know that the site is actually a revegetation site. Jon is extremely knowledgeable, dedicated and passionate and has contributed significant amounts of time to raising awareness about the marine and coastal environment. It was important to count correctly, otherwise the enlarged final pattern would be out of alignment. Before compact lenses such as this, specialised glasses were used such as 8039.The viewing lens has a 3 fold design in order to fold up to be compact and easily transportable in a pocket while also working to provide its own stand when unfolded. This Suit Jacket was tailored from fabric designed by Nino while he was working at the Foster Valley Mill. Nino developed a Mastercard such as w8043, which was sent to a mill in order to produce bolts of the desired fabrics w8044. These fabrics were then given to tailors where the final product was produced, such as this Suit Jacket.Single breasted suit jack with two buttons and notched lapel. Ice skates used to skate on Lake Catani. Ice skating was a popular activity for guest and visitors to Mt Buffalo. Ice skates were provided for hire by the the first Lessee of the Chalet, John Newton and also Norwegian born Hilda Samsing, who took over from him in 1919 and did much to pioneer and promote winter sports in the Victorian Alpine region . Ice cover on the Lake has not been sufficient for safe skating for many decades. 'After its initial popularity, skating at Mount Buffalo dwindled in the post-war years. According to Museum Victoria curator, Michelle Stevenson, few collections hold historic ice-skates, so any early examples identified in the Chalet collection will be important for their rarity." Historica) 'Ice-skating was a popular recreational activity in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries...According to Michelle Stevenson, Australian Collections hold little material culture relating to its practice other than images and film. The few pairs of ice skates in the Chalet collection, which are in good condition, are important for their rarity as well as for illustrating the popularity of skating on Lake Catani prior to WW2.' This specimen is a Common Gull, or Black-Headed Gull, in the adult winter plumage. This plumage is mostly white and grey with a small dark mark on the sides of the head. During the summer months, the plumage on the head of the bird turns a black colour which is called a hood. This species can be found over much of Europe, except Spain, Italy and Greece. It also resides in northeastern Canada, Northeast America and in some of the Caribbean Islands. This photograph was taken in the Mount Pilot Chiltern National Park. It was taken during a search for the tiger quoll conducted by a team of volunteers from the Wooragee Landcare Group. The tiger quoll is also known as the spotted-tail quoll and is found in the national park. The 2003 bushfires caused worry for the safety of the tiger quoll, hence the need for a search for it. Mount Pilot Chiltern National Park is located near Chiltern in Victoria. It's most notable landmarks include Mt Pilot and Woolshed Falls. It also has many mines from the Gold Rush in the late 1800s. It is home to much flora and fauna, including the tiger quoll. The park is also home to the box-ironbark forest that once was present in most of north-eastern Victoria. The park is a large tourist destination as in there are many bushwalks and other attractions for visitors. In 2003, bushfires raged through Mount Pilot National Park and destroyed much of the environment. Some of this damage can be seen in the burnt trees in the picture. This photograph represents the work that goes into protecting a important species like the tiger quoll and there has been much work done to preserve it. This photograph was taken when the Wooragee Landcare group went to ensure the survival of this species, highlighting how the tiger quoll is being protected. This photograph also demonstrates the significance of Mount Pilot Chiltern National Park. The park has many special flora and fauna that can only be found in this area. For example, the box-ironbark forest and the tiger quoll. The forest used to stretch over much of north-eastern Victoria and is therefore reminiscent of what that area of Victoria was once like. Tatong Tavern was built in the 1880's as Tatong Hotel or 'Pub' hotel for Mr. William Worrall. The original hotel was destroyed in 1923 by a fire, but was rebuilt for Mr. M. C. Clarke. The building is a representation of the changing society, as it changes as its uses and visitors change. The photograph shows the beer garden, which has been added more recently. The Tavern has a bar, restaurant, and accommodation area. Wooragee Landcare Group was created in 1988. Its core mission is to work towards eradicating animals and pests from the land to protect the natural vegetation and promote revegetation projects.This photograph is a great example of the type of events that Wooragee Landcare Group has organized, while educating the public about the importance of land use management. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest.Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. David FERRY (1957- ) Born in Blackpool, United Kingdom. David Ferry studied painting at the Camberwell Schools of Art and printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is currently Professor of Printmaking and Book Arts at the Cardiff School of Art, Cardiff Metropolitan University,Wales. He was Former Associate Professor of Fine Art Media, at the Long Island University, New York, USA, and former Head of Printmaking at the Winchester School of Art, UK. David Ferry was awarded a Fellowship of The Royal Society of Arts for his contribution in the foundation of the Curwen Print Study Centre in Cambridge where he became its first Artistic Director in 2003. In 2010 he was made Professor of Printmaking at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, and a full Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter / Printmakers (RE).Framed screenprint which forms part of a series called ‘Cake walking in Scotland’ which was printed 2015/16. It is a Digital Archive print with gold and silver leaf and glitter and varnish. "Upon entering a strange place, the visitor is disorientated. He looks for key markers that can act as signposts to help him find his way. The white-browed babbler is a a very active bird and is often found in noisy social groups. It lays two nests: one to lay its eggs in, and a separate nest to roost in. The Babbler is located in dry sclerophyll woodlands throughout mainland Australia. The diet of this species is varied: including insects, spiders and other invertebrates, small amphibians, crustaceans and reptiles. These birds will also eat fruits and seeds. Their call is a distinct, descending trill, which they are known to make even outside their breeding season. The tail is also brown with white spots on some of the feather tips. The front of the face is pale rufous and blends into the black at the top of the head and neck. Some of the feathers around the neck are grey. There is a patch of white on halfway down the body on the left wing. The eyes are brown, the feet are yellow, and the beak, which is missing at the bottom, is yellow. The bird stands on a brown, wooden perch with a circular bar, curved stand, and circular base. It has an identification tag tied around its right leg. Both have a large yellow wing patch and yellow sides on the tail. It has a small white ear patch, a thin white whisker at the base of the bill. When disturbed, it sometimes crouches on the ground and freezes, relying on its scalloped plumage to conceal its presence. The Little Pied Cormorant is commonly seen in Australia's wetlands. These birds reside amongst large flocks in locations where fish is plentiful.
