Alice said 'My soul and my hands were needed as a volunteer, to help the wounded soldiers survive'. St Kilda was declared a city on 2/12/1890 by the Governor of Victoria The Right Hon. John Adrian Louis Hope, the Earl of Hopetoun, GCMG (28/11/1889 - 12/07/1895). This event was commemorated 100 years later, on 2/12/1990, by the unveiling of a plaque by the current Governor Dr J. Davis McCaughey AC (18/02/1986 - 22/04/1992). Also in commemoration of the centenary, a conservatory in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens was opened that day by the Mayor, Cr. Melanie Eagle. The Eureka Pageant was held on Saturday 04 December 1954.A black and white image of Ballarat's Sovereign Hill in 1854. Sovereign Hill was the site of the Eureka Pageant held as part of the Eureka Stockade centenary celebrations.Original caption: This will be the scene of to-day's Eureka pageant at Sovereign Hill, where a clearance and levelling job has been done to allow for the slabbed stokade (left foreground), and the small hillock (centre), where the soldiery will be situated. The actual Eureka battle site is in the centre background, a mile or so away. This area of Golden Point is also historic ground. Built on the original site of the Government Camp, the Sandhurst prison was built in 1863 when it housed both male and female prisoners. In 1972 its name was changed to Bendigo Prison and it then ceased operation in 2004.
