Martha Downes was born at Codrington in 1880. She was grand-daughter of the first Presbyterian minister of Clunes. As a child she belonged to the Erskine congregation. She was trained at the Deaconess' Institute and was appointed to the Fitzroy Mission, where the Rev. A.I. Davidson was Superintendent. Miss Downes was placed in charge of the Gore St. branch of the Mission. She started a Sunday morning children's church, a Sunday School, a Sunday evening service, a mothers' meeting, a girls' and boys' club and other activities. She helped raise funds for the Young St. Mission Hall, which was built in 1912. In 1914 Sister Downes retired due to ill health, but returned in 1915 to take charge of the Erskine Mission. Her interest in girls led to the establishment of Erskine Hostel, in a delicensed hotel in Rathdown St. Carlton, where classes, guilds, club meetings and services were held. Embarked to the Middle East 11.1.1940, embarked for Greece 1.4.1941 and disembarked back in Egypt in May 1941, embarked for Aust and arrived 27.2.1943. Embarked for Milne Bay NG on 28.7.1943, embarked from Finschafen and arrived in Australia 10.3.1944. He was hospitalised twice in the Middle East with Conjunctivitis then Varicose veins, Malaria in Australia after return from NG. Discharged from the 2nd AIF on 22.10.1945. His records state he married and was date entered 5.4.1944, Wife Mrs A.E.Edwards of 40 York St Prahran. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. This bracelet was sent by a seafarer Mariner Merrilees while in Australia in the 1940s to his sister Marjorie, who lived on Manitoulin Island, Canada. The bracelet was received in a Mission to Seamen Christmas Greetings cardboard box in 1943.This bracelet was inherited by the donor, and kindly donated to the current collection of the Mission to Seafarers Victoria. This world war 2 era gift of a bracelet is significant in not only demonstrating the international significance to seafarers of the various Missions to seamen who facilitated contacts with family as illustrated by the gift box but in this instance the gift is also of historic numismatic interest. 19 Silver Peruvian ½ Dino coins made in 1902 linked to be used as a bracelet. Taken on Christmas of 1941, shown is a track to Lake Kerferd with forest on both sides. The construction on Lake Kerferd began in 1862 however it wasn't completed until 1874 due to engineering and funding issues. The lake was named after George Briscoe Kerferd (1831–1889) who was responsible for Beechworth's water scheme. George Briscoe Kerferd was born on 21 January 1831 in Liverpool, England and arrived in Melbourne April 1853. He spent his first years in Australia in Bendigo before settling down in Beechworth as a wine and spirits merchant. He married Ann Martindale on 17th December 1853 at St James Cathedral, Melbourne and between them they had three sons and five daughters. Kerferd began his political and legal career in Beechworth when he was first elected to the Municipal Council in May 1857. Later he would be elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Ovens District in November 1864, and continued to represent the area until February 1886.This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into surrounding areas of the water reserves of Victoria.
