Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, (date unknown), titled "Early bid for cable trams" noting that about 100 years ago, Ballarat's civic fathers were keen to give the city a cable tramway. Found that cable too expensive and horse tramway developed instead. Gave details of horse tram systems, costs and operations. Part of a Section of the newspaper titled "Enter the Past", looking for local history stories. Gives the Couriers address. Item not dated, but c1985. Single sheet of printed paper, collected from a magazine (p59/60) with two black and white photos of Ballarat and one colour of Bendigo. Photo 1 - 260mm long x 122mm high, photo of north east Ballarat from Town Hall, looking out to Black Hill. Photo similar to Reg. No. 102, but buildings on corner of Grenville and Bridge St has a Plume sign instead of a Mobilgas Ad. This indicates early to mid 1950's. One tram in loop in one in Bridge St. Also has a "Neptune" sign in photograph. Photo 2 - 195mm long x 75mm high - from north east corner of Sturt and Lydiard Sts looking towards Town Hall and Craig's Hotel. Black and white photograph of the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Sts from the Post Office, looking towards Ballarat Town Hall, c1910. In foreground of photograph is a ESCo tram, without windscreens hauling a horse tram (east bound) and on the other side of Sturt St. a single ESCo tram. Many people walking the street. On top of photograph is the words "Town Hall and Sturt Street, Balla", the rest of the words having been cropped out. The trailer is one of the seven window horse trams. Set of two Black and white photographs of the pile driving for the reconstruction of the Maribyrnong River Bridge from a tramway only bridge to a dual road/tram bridge. The road bridge is in the background. On Kodak paper. Photo during the 2nd half of 1965. 1419.1 - Early in the process of pile driving - Bridge tram track has been reduced to single track and the former outbound line is in use for construction purposes. 1419.2 - Roadway west of bridge looking east.
