In World War 2 Legatee Blackwood served in the AIF in the Middle East, New Guinea and Borneo in the Corps of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was awarded an OBE for services whilst commanding the 2/1 Army Field Workshop with the 9th Australian Division in the Alamein Campaign. He achieved the rank of Colonel. He joined Legacy in 1964 on the nomination of Legatees John Summerton and AN Fraser. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. St. Matthew’s Church showing footpath and fence. The church is located in Scallon Street Stawell. St. Matthew's church was erected in 1868. St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church Stawell. Now United Church. This landmark of Stawell was opened on 11th April 1869. The tower and spire, overall height of 148 feet, cost 1352 pounds and was paid for by an early mine owner. In March 1869, a month before the Church was opened, the local paper reported that a large red flag on the top of the Presbyterian Spire meant that the last brick had been laid and the massive gilt ball and cross had been placed in position. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), also known as the "Red Baron", was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories. The evidence indicates that he was shot down by ground fire from Australian troops. Reproduced Page 76 "Pioneers and Painters" One wet and miserable October night in 1866 a well-spoken young Irish braggart, who was wearing a poncho or riding cloak, knocked on the door of the home of Mrs. James Russell (nee Haughton) in Russell Road, Warrandyte. Realising that he was weary and hungry, Mrs. Russell gave the young visitor food and a bed in a hut up the back yard. The next morning she found he had gone as Harry Houghton had obligingly rowed him across the river in a mining punt. The man was Robert Burke (aka Bourke but real name Clusky), a known bushranger, who was being hunted by the police. Burke went to Kangaroo Ground where he stayed at Wellers Hotel before moving onto Hurstbridge. At Hurstbridge some hours later, he was eating breakfast given him by Miss Ellen Hurst, whose suspicions were aroused when she noticed a pistol in his pocket. Hastily she informed her brother, who loaded a shot gun and confronted Burke, an argument broke out and Burke produced a pistol. Hurst fired his shotgun, but missed. The two scuffled and during the scuffle, the pistol fired, wounding both Hurst and Burke. Burke was over-powered by some station hands and placed under arrest. Hurst, unfortunately, died later that day. Poor young boastful Burke - he was found guilty of murder and hanged, despite a strong recommendation for mercy and a large petition signed by Melbourne citizens claiming that he reacted in self defence. John Hitchen was the manager of the first Cheltenham Post Office that opened 1/8/1857 in a boot and shoe store. Mail was transported to and from St Kilda to Cheltenham by coach 6 days a week and an additional service twice weekly to Tootgarook via Frankston also by coach. 1868 Post office Savings Bank began operation and the Telegraph office was established at the Railway Station 1885. A new building was built 1891 in Point Nepean Road for the official Cheltenham Post Office and a new manual telephone exchange began 1899 with 24 subscribers. By 1909 100 subscribers, 1951 there were 1700 and in 1974 12,000 subscribers . Hence this new building was designed by Oscar A. T. Gimsey & Assoc. and built by T W Morris & Sons Mordialloc. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. The Former Elsternwick Post Office is on the Victorian Heritage Register H0640 with a full significance statement and also HO29 with the City of Glen Eira. In 1987, Australia Post released Christmas stamps and two first-day covers (envelopes with stamps affixed) with the Carols by Candlelight theme. The top first-day cover has a red candle in a gold old-style candlelight holder, with five stamps showing groups of people who are singing and holding similar candles. A large '50th Performance of Carols by Candlelight, Melbourne, Vic 3000, 24 Dec 1987' mark is stamped on the envelope, which has a background image of the Myer Music Bowl, a candle and songbook. The lower first-day cover has a boy holding a red candle in his right hand and a songbook in his left, singing. Two stamps, different to the ones in the envelope above, are affixed to the envelope and consist of groups of people holding red candles and singing. One '50th Performance of Carols by Candlelight ...' cancellation mark is stamped.
