Photograph, Home and Shop of Edward Joseph Price
John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the district working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Edward Joseph Price was the first settler to take up a lot (Lot 1, Section 1) in the Village Settlement. He built a slab hut and brought up his family in 1896. This photograph shows a newer home built in 1908. It had a section used as a shop and also had a large room built that was to be used for public gatherings. Health department regulations led to this being impossible. The house faced Ridge Road.Black and white close up photograph showing a building made from wooden boards with trees in the front. The first section of Studley House, now part of the preparatory school for Xavier College conducted by the Society of Jesus in Kew, was built in about 1857 for Parliamentarian John Hodgson, an early settler in the district, as a two-storey residence in the Classical Revival style. The name Studley House was first recorded in the Kew ratebooks in 1862, after the house was purchased in 1860 by James McEvoy, squatter. Alterations and an extension, designed by William J Ellis were undertaken in 1875. The house was again altered in 1919 during the ownership of John Wren, former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist, influential Irish-Catholic and millionaire. After 1969 the house was used by the school. (Victorian Heritage Database, 2023)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. Original monochrome photograph of Studley House in Nolan Avenue, Kew. Book, Marguerita Stephens, The journal of William Thomas : assistant protector of the Aborigines of Port Phillip &? guardian of the Aborigines of Victoria 1839 - 1867 : volume one : 1839 to 1843, 2014
This series presents 28 years of Thomas' journals, transcribed and annotated by Dr Marguerita Stephens (Vols 1-3). Vol 4 provides a substantial collection of Thomas' records of Kulin language - some reworked from earlier transcriptions by Dr Stephen Morey. For nearly three decades William Thomas chronicled his life and work with Aboriginal Victorians through his daily journal entries. Now this four volume set, comprehensively indexed and extensively annotated, shines new light on the history of race relations in Australia. Thomas' detailed observations give a rare insight into the process of cultural continuity and collapse, and the agency of Victorian Aboriginal leaders in social and economic interactions with settlers and colonial administrations in a time of great social upheaval. This first-hand account repopulates Victorian history, paying respect to the work, play and lives of the Aboriginal men and women who emerge from the pages of Thomas' journal.document reproductions, b&w illustrationswurundjeri, woiwurrung, woi wurrung, yarra, waverong, wavarong, waborong, warwarong, warworong, waworong, wa woo rong, wouvarong, wavorong, port phillip, boon wurrung, mount macedon, bacchus marsh, backhouse marsh, boonurrong, boonurong, boonmerong, bonwarong, boomerong, boonvarong, boonerong, bunurong, boonrong, boonworng, boonurong, boonwrung, boonurgs, taungurung, goulbourn, tongorong, devils river tribe, wathaurong, wadawurrung, barrabool, barabool, wattowrong, william thomas, geelong, ballarat, mount buninyong, booningong, leigh river tribe, dja dja wurrung, avoca, loddon river, bangerang, pangerang, pangeran, pangarran, pangarans, parngarangs, ovens river tribe, broken river tribe, gunai kurnai, omeo, monaro -

Letter Book, 1950s
This letter book contains the correspondence from the legal firm of William Ardlie in Warrnambool to other legal firms in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria (1951-1957). The correspondence deals mainly with legal matters concerning property transfers, wills, probates and court cases. William Ardlie (1943-1933) was the son of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. In 1865 William Ardlie established his legal practice in Warrnambool, initially in partnership with George Barber. William Ardlie, prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool, practised as a lawyer until the early 1930s and the firm continued on after his death with members of the Ardlie family involved in legal firms in the Warrnambool district until the early 21st century. This letter book is of historical interest because of the letters dealing with the property, wills etc of many residents of Warrnambool and district during the 1950s. It will be a useful research tool. This letter book of 393 pages has a buff-coloured cover which is somewhat stained. 227 pages contain copies of letters written over a period of seven years and the rest of the pages are blank. The pages are of a lightweight strength. At the front of the book is an alphabetical index with black printed letters on tabs cut out of the outer edges of the pages.Agents 1951ardlie family, history of warrnambool -

Booklet with Photographs, Stan Baulch, Cowabee, 1978 (booklet)
These items concern the history of the Baulch family ownership of Cowabee, a large grazing property in the Riverina in N.S.W. In the 1870s Samuel Baulch, the son of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch, established a property in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale area called Rose Park. In 1893 he acquired Dunmore, a nearby property, and Rose Park became part of that estate. In 1910 Samuel Baulch purchased Cowabee in N.S.W. and Stan Baulch, the son of Samuel and Eliza, later managed Cowabee for some years. After Samuel’s death Stan Baulch and his two brothers split up Dunmore and Stan acquired the eastern third which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. This booklet and associated material is of some historical interest as a summary of the history of Cowabee, one of the properties owned by the Baulch family of the Western District in the early 20th century. It will be of some use to researchers, with the photographs an added bonus. .1 This is a booklet of 41 pages with a buff-coloured paper cover with a black tape binding. The front cover has a title in hand-printed lettering and the back cover has a red stamp (partly obliterated). The booklet contains typed information on Cowabee Station. .2 This is a small envelope containing six black and white photographs, all with handwritten information on the back. .21 & .22 These are two loose sheets of writing pad paper with handwriting in blue ink. .1 Cowabee .2 Snaps Cowabee Church Cemetry(sic) & pise buildings left there cowabee station, n.s.w., baulch family western district victoria, history of warrnambool -

Thiss paper contains details of the purchase of Lot 11 in the Township of Allansford in 1864. The purchaser, Isabella McQueen, was born in Scotland in 1814, married Alexander McQueen in 1850 and with her family migrated to Australia in 1854. After her husband's death in 1860 Isabella purchased the land in Frank Street, Allansford in 1864 and lived in a house there with family members until her death in 1895. She had purchased the land, via an agent, from John Allan who with his brothers were the pioneer European settlers in the Allansford area. John Allan had created the township of Allansford in the mid 1850s by sub-dividing the land he owned there. John Allan moved to the Gippsland area late in 1864.
