In 1940 Harold John Hassell was a 4th year student in the Science school. He won the Mica Smith Trust Fund (open championship) and was awarded the 1940 Honour Blazer. The School of Mines was established in 1870 in Ballarat, making it Australia's third oldest tertiary institution. Redmond Barry was its first president, and he was involved in the creation of university degree level courses for the school. The School of Mines was divided into a tertiary division and a technical division. The tertiary division provided higher education courses such as mining engineering, geology, education and business studies, while the technical division provided such programs as wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying.It remained in that form until the 1967 when it was split into three institutions, Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School, and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. They remained three entities until 1976. Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education merged into Ballarat College of Advanced Education. The Ballarat School of Industries and Ballarat Technical School merged into the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat (SMB) in 1976. Several entities merged or had arrangements with SMB. In 1994, a memo of understanding (MOU) was signed between SMB and the Ararat Technical School, which was founded in 1969. Then, in 1998, SMB and the Horsham-based Wimmera Institute of TAFE (1984), dating back to 1882, merged into the University of Ballarat to create a larger University.This three buttoned, bottle green woolen blazer is edged in black twill piping and has a Ballarat School of Mines coat of arms on pocket "Honor 1940 ATHS - XVIII. The two side pockets are also edged in the black twill and there is a trim of the twill 8.3cm from the sleeve cuff. The breast pocket has a top binding of yellow and blue stripes. The seams are hand stitched down to prevent fraying and there are tapes hand sewn on the inside across the back of the pockets to prevent tearing. In 1958 the Ballarat Teachers' College moved from Dana Street Primary School to a custom built college in Gillies Street. Accommodation again became a problem in 1968 with the introduction of the three year Diploma of Teaching (Primary) course. On 19 December 1972 the State College of Victoria Act received Royal Assent. The Act restructured the teacher training policies of Victoria. Ballarat was one of the State Teachers' Colleges which until 30th June 1973, was under Education Department control. Ballarat Teachers' College was renames the State College of Victoria at Ballarat and had its own governing council. In 1975 State College of Victoria at Ballarat moved to the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education campus at Mount Helen, and the name was changed to Ballarat College of Advanced Education. This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. The pocket is a dual one. Joyce van Leeuwen remembers: 'Towards the end of our College year, were were given written authorisation denoting our sporting teams, to take to Paterson & Powell for embroidery on our blazer pockets. On my pocket, the hockey sticks, the BB for basketball, as netball was then called, all mine. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. The Pitman Benjamin Prize for Engineering Sustainability is awarded to the Civil Engineering student whose thesis best promotes sustainable engineering. It is awarded in memory of a Heather Pitman, the first woman to graduate in Engineering at Ballarat. The Pitman Benjamin Prize for Engineering Sustainability is sponsored by Benjamin Real Estate, and was first awarded in 2006. Heather was the first female graduate from Ballarat College of Advanced Education and obtained outstanding results. Throughout her career she worked predominantly in local government and for much of that time with the Shire of Ballarat, then the City of Ballarat. During that time she worked as a civil engineer and in planning. Heather was a trail blazer in many respects and was one of the first women to be employed into an engineering position at that time. It was not easy, and she applied for about 200 jobs before being employed by the Shire of Greensborough, north of Melbourne. In 2002 Heather Pitman was Land Development Engineer with the City of Ballarat. The following year she was the City of Ballarat's Manager, Building & Assets. The Ballarat Teachers' College Class of 1949 60th Reunion started at the Dana Street Primary School, the home of the Ballarat Teachers' College in 1949. The reunion started with singing the College Anthem 'Extra Muros', and many other songs associated with the College. The attendees then travelled by bus around the Ballarat Schools they worked with as Student Teachers' in 1949.
