These notes are based on a report prepared for the Board re the donation of materials collected by Wal Jack and donated to the BTM in 2011. The following notes are general across the collection unless written for a specific Ballarat item. Has proven association with Wal Jack and tramway developments within Australasia until 1964 and given their extent particular significance. Yields information about the Phoenix foundry and tramway crossing in Sturt St in 1950.Newspaper Clipping from The Courier, 12/2/1950 titled "Rail Lines link with Old Phoenix Foundry", about the uncovering of the rails left in Sturt St at Armstrong St, part of the former Phoenix Foundry line - uncovered during rail replacement activities. Has a photograph showing the two exposed ends of workers replacing the rail line and gauging the track. Gives a short history of the Phoenix Foundry. Cutting from the Christmas Number of 'The Ballarat Courier', Special Edition 18/12/1923. Has the caption "To clear the view the Tramway Shelter in Sturt St. was removed." Yields information about accidents in Ballarat and a tram / tram collision which later resulted in a fire on one of the trams.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, 16/3/1963, titled "Tram in Collision later Catches Fire", describing the incident in which a tram caught fire, following a collision between two trams in Lydiard St and then later on a fire in one of trams. Newspaper clipping from The Courier, 20/3/1963, titled "Bluebirds cause keen excitement in the city", recording the passing of the convoy of Donald Campbell's Bluebird car and speedboat through Ballarat and stopping outside the Town Hall. Photo has tramcar 14 and a bogie tram in the background. Donald Campbell himself was unable to attend. Bluebird was one the motor vehicle used in the land world speed record attempts of the era. Show many people milling around the truck carrying the trailer, barricades. People had blocked Sturt St at this point. See Reg Item 3734 for a print of the photograph.
