The journals of George Augustus Robinson (1788-1866), the Chief Protector of Aborigines of Port Phillip from 1839- March 1850 are a rich source of historical and ethnohistorical information. His voluminous private papers and journals were acquired by the Mitchell Library in NSW in 1939. Newspaper Clipping (p7) from "Catholic", No. 178, November 1998, contains the story written by Mother May Oliver, Imp. James O'Collins RC Bishop of Ballarat, January 1945, chapter 7 of "All for All", relating to the life of the 'the young girl countess Elizabeth Wolff-Metterich of Germany. The story revolves around her visit to Melbourne and Ballarat - in particular the visit to Lorretto - sighting of 'a tram (streetcar) bearing 'convent' as its head sign'. The reference to arrival by tram in the article suggests by the author that the Countess arrived by electric tram (by the use of the word 'streetcar'. In actual fact, date of visit was 1898, so it would have be the horse tram. A memorial to those who died when the S.S.Casino ran aground in bad weather at Apollo Bay in 1932. This memorial held the original propeller, the wreck bell and a barometer. The wreck bell was removed in later years because of continuous ringing by mischief makers and the barometer also was removed. The barometer was placed there for the fishermen to consult before going to sea. A service is held every year at 11 a.m. July 10th to commemorate the sinking of the ship.
