Chicory farming on Phillip Island was introduced in 1870, with the root destined used as a coffee additive or substitute. It reached it's peak during WW2.

Gould League was set up in 1909 to prevent bird egg collecting and to educate students to protect Australian birds.It was a pioneer in environmental education in Australian schools.

Subdivision of Summerlands commenced in the 1920s with 12 large allotments created, along with features such as a roundabout and cypress trees. Between 1927 and 1931, 227 new blocks were created, and from 1929 to 1940 there was a nine-hole golf course on what is now the Penguin Parade car park.

Wollomai was the winner of Melbourne Cup 1875 and bred & trained by John Cleeland of Phillip Island.

Very early scene of Cowes showing the jetty, Isle of Wight Hotel and jetty shed. Charles Turner was an English mezzotint engraver and draughtsman who specialized in portraiture.

Henry [Harry ] is the son of John Blake and Ethel May Cleeland. He farmed near Surf Beach estate and lived at Woolamai House.

Captain Reid served as a Councillor of the Phillip Island and Woolamai Shire in 1875. He was the first Trustee and President, as well as being instrumental in establishing a school at Rhyll on block 13 about 1870. He died in 1891 at the age of 75. He was an early resident of Rhyll and 1st President of the Phillip Island Cemetery Trust

The Findlay family were well known in the area.

Title of property shows the property was owned by Emily Henty in 1894. " Charman Dene" was Alfred Herbert and Edith Blanche Holdsworth’s holiday house. The property was sold following Alfred Herbert’s death in 1929. Mrs Champion later owned the property. Charmandene Guest House was located on the beach front along Lover's Walk. It was relocated in the 1980s to Osborne Road in Cowes , where it still stands.

Joshua Gliddon wrote Phillip Island in Picture and Story which is referred to in the letter. The McHaffie family were original settlers on the Island.

Photos taken by an unknown pioneer aviator researched by Kevin O'Reilly who has written a book "Flyers of Time" on pioneer aviation. Photos show the Island and San Remo prior to development and before the bridge was built from the mainland.

St John's Presbyterian Church is in Chapel Street, Cowes. The time span of the photo appears to be 1920s-1940s.

The racehorse 'Wollamai" [ or Wollemi ] was bred and trained on Phillip Island by John Cleeland on Phillip Island. It won the Melbourne Cup in 1875. John Cleeland walked the horse to Melbourne to compete.
