The former hotel stood on the south side of Johnston Street opposite Trenerry Crecent. The tram has the destination of "Lonsdale St." Adjacent to the hotel is a billboard advertising the "Vote Yes" campaign for the abolition of Hotel licenses - see reference - the referendum was lost. Photo of a very crowded cable tram set inbound in Bridge Road, c1925, lettered M&MTB" with the destination of Spencer St with many men crowding onto the tram. Alongside the tram is the front of a motor vehicle. Cable tram 81? In the background is a number of shops - L. Johnson Saddler, S. Christie and J Hogan (?) Trotting Sulky Manufacturers and A. Vickery & Son Manufacturing Engineers. Note from Rod Atkins 29/7/2019: The tram is full because the crowd as discharged from the racecourse so most likely taken on a Saturday. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. The Second view is a wider view of the same project. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. The photo shows a cable tram set, trailer 357, at the Flinders St terminus in Elizabeth St. The tram has the return destination of North Melbourne. Note that the destination signage is both black on white letters and white on black letters. The grip or dummy is well loaded with passengers queing to board the trailer. Possibly a warm day given the ladies clothing. In the background are many pedestrians crossing the road to the station. On the corner is a Tea Rooms shop. Set of destination indicator equipment that was fitted to Z3 and A class trams. Each item consists of various electronic parts contained within a metal case that could have been cabled together. Equipment manufactured by (Carl) C. Brose of Wuppertal Germany and maintained by Font Electronics of Melbourne - some items have the manufacturers details on them along with the details of the maintenance company and serial numbers etc. Photo .1 - shows the set of equipment as placed on display in the training room. .1 - set of two route number boxes, three individual controlled blinds, driven by a motor and control gear. Has a Fluro light fitted internally.
