Item donated anonymously to a teacher of the Australian Lace Guild. The lady who was about 80 years old said the lace originally belonged to her aunt who worked in a dressmakers in Flinders Lane in the 1930s where she acquired the pieces of lace.Cream square tablecloth edged in hand made tape lace with hand crocheted edge. History of Aboriginal occupation of the Melbourne area. Evidence of shell midden refuse associated with their campsites. Evidence of scarred trees and scatters of stone artefacts along major stream systems. It has been established that man was in the Melbourne area 40,000 years ago and that Aboriginal occupation probably continued uninterrupted throughout the extremes of the last ice age, around 20,000 years ago when Port Phillip itself was dry land. Study will take 2 - 3 years. Aims (1) identify areas of potential archaeological importance (2) implement a pilot survey program (3) prepare comprehensive proposals for survey of sites. Story of the 'Mullens House', originally small dwelling made of hand made bricks by Mrs Mullens' father, Mr Forbes of Glen Waverley. Came from Scotland 93 years ago. As the family increased more rooms were added. Hugh Mullens was a woodcutter and later an orchardist and later still a road contractor. Mrs Tainton, a daughter, still lives in part of the original property. Another daughter, Mrs Stocks who was a widow stayed on with her mother at the old home. It is now the property of Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works. Mr & Mrs Hugh Mullen's had 12 children. Letter - Correspondence, House 113 Springvale Road, Nunawading, n.d
A letter from Nance Leach (undated) telling the history of John McClelland's house. He arrived from Ireland in 1863...5 years later they selected 80 acres at Tunstall (Nunawading) and cultivated a market garden, The property was on the site of Stanley Engineering. The couple and one daughter retained the house and Whitehorse Road section of the property about 1948. This was sold to 'Turners' on condition Turners removed the house to 113 Springvale Road for Miss Tess McClelland. When she died the house was sold to Hal Johnson and he later sold it to Mr Florio. John McClelland died 1911 aged 77. Article and advertisement for sale of 331 - 335 Mitcham Road, Mitcham, home of Dr Threlkeld. It is part of the land purchased by Dr Francis Drake 75 years ago, he built a surgery and was involved with a private hospital on the next door site where Mitcham R.S.L. is now. He also conducted a sanatorium where Whitefriars is now. Between the wars Dr Stanley Cochrane built the home incorporated into a surgery in 1929. Unearthing local heritage has won two Year 8 Korowa Anglican Girls School students the state finals in the 'Victorian Heritage' section of the National History Awards. Serrin Smyth and Georgina Blood submitted a video which was one of over 2000 entries from across Victoria. Their chosen subject was in the history challenge topic 'Civic Rights and Responsibilities in our History' was Blood's Cottage in Station Street, Box Hill. The cottage is now 144 years old and is the oldest surviving cottage in Box Hill. Keeping the cottage has, and will definitely have, an impact on society.
