Copy of a Country Fire Authority Report of Fire or Alarm No 65, dated March 1973 when the fire brigade was called to a fire at a disused weighbridge in Daly St, Long Gully. When the brigade arrived the weighbridge with its contents were completely burnt out. The Council used it for a storeroom. Firemen who attended were: S Knight, F Gannaway, W Waight, G Ellis, M Ellis, R Wee-Hee, R Delves, B Brooks, R Boland and E Carruthers. Document - LA TROBE UNIVERSITY BENDIGO COLLECTION: B.I.T. AND STATE COLLEGE WILL BE MERGED
A 'Bendigo Advertiser' article with the heading ' B.I.T. and State College Will Be Merged. ' Mr. McClure State Member for Bendigo released the news about the merger and the site of the building proposed for teacher education. The decision was greeted with contrasting dismay, excitement and resignation. Mr. K.G. Scarrott, the Principal of Bendigo Teachers' College said the Australian Universities Commission recommended the merger in their report. Cornish Association Newsletter Volume 9, Number 2, June 2003 mentions the unveiling of the Long Gully Mining Monument on May 25th. The unveiling was carried out by John Bolitho Grand Bard of Cornwall in conjunction with Cr Darrel McClure. The ceremony was followed by afternoon tea supplied by the Long Gully History Group and organised by Carol Rasmussen of the Long Gully Community House. Some special guests were Gwen Phillips president of the C.A.V. and Vivian Pryor from Newquay Cornwall. The day was finished by Annual Dinner held at the Kangaroo Sports Club. Plans for other celebrations were underway. A paper, the Cornish in the First World War, was presented by Tom Luke at the Cornish association of South Australia's seminar. Handwritten extracts from the New Chum Railway Mine Manager's Report 17/2/03. Mine Manager W Hicks. Extracts: Machinery. New Boiler is giving every satisfaction. While bailing water after the Xmas holidays, one of the ropes broke with a full tank of water. The tank being fitted with safety appliances, acted. Therefore no damage was done to the shaft. The old ropes were taken off and replaced by two new ones of 2,500 feet each, with a breaking strain of 34 tons. Mine 7 machinery are all in good working order. 1925 - Portion of Cath.
