Bendigo Advertiser ''the way we were'' from Friday, January 2, 2004. World champion: Inglewood's John Donaldson, better known as Jack, was born in 1886. Although he lacked professional training, Jack skyrocketed to fame as a sprinter. Starting at the Stawell gift, his stride of eight feet, four inches, soon earned him world records for the 150 and 300 yard races; records which stood for nearly 100 years. More than 450 people packed the Mulqueen Family Chapel yesterday to pay their respects to celebrated Bendigo music identity, historian and naturalist Peter Ellis OAM. He was described by family and friends as a teacher, mentor, band member, conservationist, philanthropist, historian, author, storyteller and national treasure. Rob Moors spoke of the work which earned Mr Ellis the Order of Australia Medal in 2012. 'Peter's dedication to the bush and his love for bush music means he will live on through his work and the legacy that he's left us, a legacy that allows others to learn and to benefit from his work and to follow his lead,' he said. Mr Ellis was awarded the OAM for services to the arts through the collection and preservation of Australian folk history and heritage. One hundred and forty-three page brown cardboard covered 'First book of Arithmetic' for use of schools issued by the Commissioner of National Education, Ireland, dated 1876. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Pall Mall: Sandhurst circa 1860s. In January, 1865, land in Pall Mall sold for 90 pounds per foot. In 1867, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the town. The Prince Albert Hall was erected next to the town hall for the Prince's visit. Unfortunately, the hall burnt down just hours before his arrival. A torchlight procession to mark the occasion saw the model of 'Galatea', manned by four boys, aged about eight, catch fire and result in the death of three people.
