Artefact, Pipes x 4, Mid 20th century
These pipes came from the Warrnambool firm of Peter Hand Tobacco Company Pty Ltd and were typical of the pipes sold by that firm. The Peter Hand Tobacco Company commenced in 1958 and was a wholesale distributor of tobacco and cigarettes throughout the Western District until early in the 21st century when tobacco smoking was no longer a widespread habit in any community in Australia. The retail shop was at 97 Liebig Street Warrnambool. These pipes are of interest as they came from the Peter Hand Tobacco Company, a prominent business in Warrnambool for 50 years. They are also a memento of the times when pipe-smoking amongst men was prevalent. These are briar pipes with black Bakelite mouth pieces. All appear to be unused. .1 A brown briar pipe with an indented pattern .2 A brown briar pipe with a polished wood .3 A light brown briar pipe with a mottled pattern finish .4 A brown briar pipe with a smooth polished finish1 ‘Seville Special’ .2 ‘Real Briar’ .3 ‘Nording Danmark N 118’ .4 ‘Vavrs VZ’ (?) peter hand tobacco company (warrnambool), history of warrnambool -

Photograph, Palstra home at 60 Guildford Road, Surrey Hills, 1920s, 1921
Date is the one given by descendant Julia Thornton. William and May Palstra were married in 1920; this was their first and only home. They had 3 children, Margaret, Jocelyn and William. Margaret Thornton was a daughter of William and May Palstra; one of her daughters, Julia Thornton still lives in the house in 2023. For a time 3 generations of the family lived in the house - Margaret Thornton, Julia Thornton, her then-husband and their 2 children. The house remains in 2023 with extensions to the rear and side. Donation form signed by Julia Thornton. This is one of very few homes in the area which has been held continuously by the same family. It is typical of the Californian bungalow style built after World War 1 but modified for expanded family needs. This was achieved in a reasonably sympathetic manner before a heritage overlay was approved for a large part of Guildford Road and without a 2-storey extension.Black and white photo of William and May Palstra standing in the gateway of their Californian bungalow home in 1921. It is painted or stained in a dark colour and has 3 chimneys and a brick verandah. The fence is of wire-mesh construction. Photograph, Surrey Hills Station and car park
There are 3 tracks; the third track was built in 1971, which gives an approximate date for the photo. At this time the original station buildings were demolished and replaced by buildings constructed from concrete bricks and a second subway replaced the overhead footbridge. According to Roderick Smith, a local railway enthusiast, originally there had been 3 railway houses at the Mont Albert end of the northern car park. These were demolished to extend the car park. Certainly 8 Bedford Avenue, built as the station master's house was demolished at this time. The palm tree had been planted in the station master's front garden and was retained in a small garden bed within the car park. A black and white photograph of a station with cars parked on both sides of the 3 tracks. A Harris train is departing the station heading towards Mont Albert.
